The Gophers men’s basketball team signed Davidson transfer forward Bobby Durkin on Monday. The 6-foot-7, 220-pound wing is considered a four-star recruit in 247Sports transfer rankings and the 11th-best small forward available.

“Bobby is a phenomenal shooter with great size and length,” head coach Niko Medved said in a statement. “He’s a versatile player who can create space and has good floor vision. In addition, his defensive play and rebounding ability really stands out. We’re excited to have Bobby as a Golden Gopher.”

Durkin averaged 13.5 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 33 games during his true sophomore season in 2024-25. He saw improvements from his freshman year, when he put up 8.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists.

Durkin, who has two years of eligibility remaining for the U, shot 35 percent from 3-point range, 41 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free-throw line last season. He was disruptive on defense (1.3 steals per game) and took care of the basketball (0.8 turnovers per game) a season ago.

The Darien, Ill., native finished his high school career at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and is the third incoming player via the NCAA transfer portal, joining Colorado State forward Jaylen Crocker-Johnson on April 1 and Cal forward BJ Omot of Mankato on April 2. Durkin’s news was first reported by On3.com

Medved still has seven open scholarship spots for next year’s roster.

Nearly perfect bracket made for women’s NCAA

One person came one first-round women’s NCAA Tournament game away from perfection in the CBS Sports Bracket Challenge.

The one miss occurred when 10th-seeded South Dakota State defeated No. 7 Oklahoma State 74-68 on March 22. Coming that close to a perfect bracket is nearly impossible. The NCAA computed the chances of getting every game correct at one in 9.2 quintillion. It didn’t compute the chances of finishing with just one loss.

$2.8B NCAA settlement has final hearing

The landmark $2.8 billion settlement that will impact every corner of college athletics in the months ahead had its final hearing, including athletes who criticized the sprawling plan as confusing and one that undervalued them, and attorneys who said they were concerned about the impacts on campuses across the country.

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken gave no indication the complaints have changed her mind, though she acknowledged the concerns. That sets the table to move forward and plaintiffs’ attorneys were hopeful she will issue her final decision in a few weeks.

“Basically I think it is a good settlement, don’t quote me, and I think it’s worth pursuing,” Wilken said. “I think some of these things could be fixed if people tried to fix them and that it would be worth their while to try to fix them.”

She asked both sides to come back in a week with how they might be able to address some of her concerns.

Wilken has already granted preliminary approval of the settlement involving the NCAA and the nation’s five largest conferences. Barring any changes, the plan will take effect July 1 and clear the way for every school to share up to $20.5 million each with its student-athletes annually.
