Graduate student goaltender Henry Welsch continued his hot start and the UMass Lowell hockey team completed an impressive weekend with a 2-1 victory over Colgate on Saturday night before a crowd of 4,110 fans at the Tsongas Center.

UML (3-1) has won three straight games, all with Welsch in net. Welsch has only allowed five goals in those 180 minutes between the pipes.

A sizzling power play helped the River Hawks skate to a 5-2 win over Colgate on Friday. The power play proved huge in the rematch.

UML went 2-for-3 with the man advantage, including a power-play strike 1:50 into the third period to snap a 1-1 tie.

UMass Lowell forward Scout Truman (24) celebrates with teammate Chris Delaney, left, after scoring a goal during a 2-1 win over Colgate on Saturday.

Freshman Lee Parks was stopped near the left post, but the puck squirted to Owen Cole. Cole was denied, but he sent his own rebound past Colgate goaltender Nick Haas. Parks picked up an assist on the play, his first collegiate point.

Colgate took a 1-0 lead at 5:59 of the second period on a tally by Daniel Panetta. But UML answered less than two and a half minutes later. With a Colgate player in the penalty box, defenseman Nick Anderson sent a pass from the right point to freshman forward Chris Delaney.

Delaney switched to his forehand and dished the puck to Scout Truman, who one-timed in a shot at 8:15.

It was Truman’s team-leading third goal. Truman, graduate student defenseman Ben Meehan and Delaney lead the team with four points after four games.
