The stakes are higher as teams move on in the postseason this week, with titles on the line in lacrosse, boys volleyball, boys tennis and boys golf in the coming days.

The MCAL individual boys tennis tournament begins Tuesday at Flyte Racquet Club in San Rafael. Marin Academy and San Domenico will battle Monday at Peacock Gap for Bay Counties League boys golf honors and a spot in the North Coast Section Division II tournament.

Expect an assault on the record books as the MCAL track and field championship meet is set for Saturday at San Marin. The Bay Area Conference championship meet will be held the same day at Chabot College. Meanwhile NCS diving and swimming meets begin Thursday and Friday in Concord.

Boys lacrosse

No less than 13 lacrosse teams were seeded for the North Coast Section playoffs, which begin in earnest on Tuesday. A new competitive equity format for NCS seeding in most sports has been met with some uncertainty by coaches.

“There’s been lots of controversy around the top seeds,” said Marin Academy boys lacrosse head coach Skyler Hopkins, whose team drew a No. 6 seed in the NCS Division I bracket. “Monte Vista getting the top seed over Marin Catholic has a lot of people upset.”

With the MCAL championship in hand, Marin Catholic is now chasing the NCS crown. The Wildcats (17-5) begin their quest against MCAL foe Novato (12-7), seeded 15th. Marin Catholic owns a pair of double-digit wins over the Hornets in the regular season.

Marin Catholic has a challenging road ahead, while top-seeded Monte Vista (17-2) has a first-round bye and a relatively easy path to the semifinals.

Tam (14-6) got some respect with a No. 4 seed and a first-round home matchup against No. 13 San Ramon Valley (9-9). The winner of that matchup will face either No. 5 Redwood (12-9) or No. 12 Justin-Siena (10-9). The Giants beat Justin-Siena, 14-8, in March.

After Saturday’s MCAL championship loss to Marin Catholic, Redwood was already looking forward to a rematch. Both teams would have to survive to the NCS finals for that to happen.

Marin Academy’s BCL championship and an undefeated league record earned the Wildcats (13-7) the sixth seed and a first-round matchup with No. 11 Rancho Cotate (14-2).

“I feel good about our six seed, that’s where we should be,” Hopkins said. “We’re certainly not looking past Rancho Cotate at all. They’re a big, athletic team and we need to play our best lacrosse to get a win.”

A win over Rancho Cotate would likely pit Marin Academy against No. 3 De La Salle in the quarterfinals. The Spartans beat Marin Academy, 15-2, in the regular season.

No. 5 seed Terra Linda (8-9) opens the D-II tournament at home against No. 12 College Park (9-9). In the other half of the bracket, No. 9 San Marin (9-9) hosts No. 11 Northgate (7-8).

Girls lacrosse

Redwood (15-4) was awarded with the second seed, brushing off Saturday’s upset loss in the MCAL championship to Marin Catholic, which is seeded fourth for NCS. The two rivals could meet again for the NCS championship if they can get past the competition. Redwood opens on the road against No. 15 Las Lomas (12-4), while Marin Catholic (17-4) hosts No. 13 Campolindo (9-8), as part of a doubleheader with the MC boys team.

No. 5 Marin Academy (15-3) hosts Bay Counties League rival No. 12 University (9-9) in the opening draw, just four days after Marin Academy beat University in the Bay Counties League finals. Marin Academy has three convincing wins over the Red Devils already this season. The matchup is part of a doubleheader with the Marin Academy boys team at San Rafael High.

MCAL foes Tam (12-5-1) and Branson (10-5)face off in Tuesday’s opening round of the Division 1 girls lacrosse playoffs, with the No. 6 Red-tailed Hawks hosting the No. 11 Bulls. Tam held off Branson, 14-11, in their regular-season meeting. No. 9 San Marin (11-6) is on the road at No. 8 Miramonte (13-3), with the winner likely to face top-seeded San Ramon Valley in the quarterfinals.

Boys volleyball

Redwood is carrying the MCAL championship and riding a five-game streak into the NCS D-II playoffs. The No. 5 Giants (23-6) will host No. 12 Making Waves Academy (19-3). Redwood has powered up its game for the postseason. Kills leader Beckett Shewey and libero Jake Alley led the Giants to a three-set win over Tam in the MCAL finals.

Tam (17-14) was awarded the ninth seeded in the D-III bracket, and will travel to Richmond for a first-round matchup with No. 8 Kennedy (11-3) on Tuesday. The winner will face top-seeded Encinal, which got a first-round bye.

Terra Linda (13-11), the fourth seed in the D-IV playoffs, will host No. 13 Stuart Hall (8-13). No. 14 Archie Williams (9-20) is on the road against No. 3 Cardinal Newman (9-10).
