Duke graduate transfer Jaylen Blakes hit a short jumper with 1.5 seconds left to lift Stanford to a 72-71 win over North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Saturday, the first meeting as Atlantic Coast Conference rivals and the first Cardinal win over the Tar Heels in 15 meetings.

Blakes took the inbounds pass in the backcourt after Seth Trimble hit two free throws for North Carolina with 7.7 seconds to play and worked his way up the left side. He bumped a defender on the left side of the line as he moved toward the basket. He then stepped back and swished the short shot.

That ended the evenly played game that saw 12 ties and 14 lead changes with the biggest lead seven points. Each team had a five-point lead in second half.

Maxime Raynaud had 24 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks for the Cardinal (12-6, 4-3) and Blakes had 20 points with seven assists. Oziyah Sellers added 11.

RJ Davis scored 19 to lead the Tar Heels (12-7, 5-2), who had their season-best four-game winning streak end.

Blacksher helps Cal beat N.C. State >> Jovan Blacksher Jr. scored 14 points to lead five in double-figure scoring, and Cal led for most of the way and beat N.C. State 65-62 in Raleigh, N.C.

Jayden Taylor converted a three-point play to give N.C. State a 62-61 advantage with 1:20 to play, its first lead since the midway point of the first half. Blacksher Jr. answered with a layup and Cal’s DJ Campbell added a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left.

Breon Pass missed a 3 for N.C. State to end it.

Campbell finished with 13 points for Cal (9-9, 2-5 ACC). Jeremiah Wilkinson added 11 points, and Andrej Stojakovic and Mady Sissoko each had 10.

Taylor scored 18 points to lead N.C. State (9-9, 2-5).

No. 1 Auburn escapes with win over No. 23 Georgia >> Tahaad Pettiford hit 5 of 7 shots from 3-point range, scoring 24 off the bench to help No. 1 Auburn escape No. 23 Georgia with a 70-68 win in Athens, Ga.

Auburn (17-1, 5-0 SEC) has won 10 in a row and a second straight game without star Johni Broome, who injured his ankle last week. Georgia (14-4, 2-3) struggled with free throws, making 9 of 20 from the line.

Vanderbilt 76, No. 6 Tennessee 76-75 >> Jason Edwards scored 18 points as Vanderbilt (15-3, 3-2 SEC) held off No. 6 Tennessee 76-75 for the Commodores’ second straight win. Tennessee (16-2, 3-2) has lost two of its first three SEC road games.

Creighton 68, No. 14 UConn 63 >> Jamiya Neal had a career-high 24 points to help Creighton (12-6, 5-2 Big East) snap UConn’s 28-game home winning streak with a 68-63 victory over the Huskies (13-5, 5-2).

WASHINGTON STATE 74, SANTA CLARA 47 >> Alex Covill scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Cougars (12-8, 7-2 WCC) to an easy win over the Broncos (9-11, 3-7) in Santa Clara.

The Broncos shot just 26.2 percent for the day as they fell behind 39-17 at halftime and never could threaten the Cougars.

Quakes sign San Jose’s Spivey brothers >> The San Jose Earthquakes announced they have signed brothers Kaedren and Jermaine Spivey to professional contracts. Midfielder Kaedren Spivey has signed a contract with the Earthquakes’ MLS first team as a Homegrown Player through 2028 with a club option for 2029. Meanwhile, forward Jermaine Spivey has signed a contract with the Earthquakes’ MLS NEXT Pro Team, The Town FC, through 2026 with a club option for 2027.

“Kaedren and Jermaine come from an exceptional family, and we’re absolutely thrilled for them to take this big step,” said Earthquakes general manager Chris Leitch. “They are both tremendous talents, but more importantly, they’re tremendous young men.”

Born and raised in San Jose, Kaedren and Jermaine are two of three Spivey siblings in the Earthquakes’ developmental pyramid. Shemar Spivey, the youngest of the trio, is currently in his first season with the Quakes Academy U-14 squad.

Kaedren, 15, is the reigning 2023-24 MLS NEXT Under-15 MVP presented by adidas after a breakout season, scoring 11 goals in 21 games.

Jermaine, 18, began his journey in the Earthquakes’ youth feeder teams at age eight. He burst on the national scene as an Quakes Academy U-13 player, leading the nation with 36 goals in 26 matches as the team was ranked No. 4 in the country by TopDrawerSoccer.

The Quakes also announced they’ve transferred goalkeeper Emi Ochoa to Club de Fútbol Cruz Azul of Liga MX for an undisclosed fee.

U.S. knocks off Venezuela 3-1 >> Patrick Agyemang and Matko Miljevic scored in their international debuts, Jack McGlynn got his first national team goal and the United States beat Venezuela 3-1 in a friendly in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., between teams missing their regular starters.

The U.S. won for the fourth time in five matches since Mauricio Pochettino took over as head coach last year.

Ex-Raiders coach Del Rio to coach in Paris >> The Paris Musketeers football team hired former NFL coach Jack Del Rio as their new head coach. The Musketeers are the only French team in the European League.

Del Rio, the 61-year-old former three-sport star at Hayward High, had a 93-94 record in a 12-year NFL head coaching career that included stints with the Jaguars (2003-11) and Raiders (2015-17).

He stepped down in November as a senior adviser on Wisconsin’s coaching staff after he was arrested near campus for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Swiatek routs Raducanu at Aussie Open >> Everything came so easily for Iga Swiatek during a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Emma Raducanu in the only Australian Open women’s third-round match between two past Grand Slam champions.
