


St. Francis High’s girls soccer team — which earned the first league title in program history — saw its stellar season come to a close in Watsonville on Tuesday.
The Sharks, champion of the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s Santa Teresa Division, suffered a 5-1 loss to North Monterey County in a Central Coast Section play-in game.
Isabella Hernandez and Isavela Valadez each had a goal and two assists for the Condors (14-4-3, 6-3-3). who tied Pacific Collegiate School (8-6-3, 6-3-3) for second place in the PCAL Mission Division.Andrea Ibarra, Herendira Navoa, and Anahi Flores also scored for NMC.
The Sharks, who trailed 4-0 at the half, scored their lone goal in the 55th minute. Aubrey Nualart send her corner kick to freshman Alyssandra Peterson’s feet. And Peterson laid the ball off to senior defender Olivia Chavez-Arce, who nailed it to the top right corner of the goal from 22 yards out.
Sharks leading scorer Peyton Orradre, a junior who finished with 16 goals on the season, had one of her shots hit the post.
Junior goalie Madison Silva made nine saves for the Sharks (10-3-1, 7-1-0).
NMC scored its final goal in the 73rd minute on a free kick. Silva was blinded by the sun on the play.
The youth-laden Sharks graduate just three seniors, including two starters.
Sharks head coach Chris Croghan missed the game. He was with 17 St. Francis students on a mission trip in Tijuana, Mexico. He received updates from his assistant coaches.
“I’m so proud of the commitment the girls showed this year and how excited they were for this game,” Croghan said. “Fortunately we only graduate a few girls and the rest seem more hungry than ever to improve. A large group of them have truly fallen in love with the sport of soccer and are willing to put in the work to get better … What more can we ask as coaches!”
Boys basketball
At Harbor 58, PCS 42 >> The Pirates capitalized on the turnovers it created with their pressure defense in the second half and closed their regular season with a nonleague win Tuesday.
The Pirates (7-18, 1-9), who tied San Lorenzo Valley (5-18, 1-9) for fifth place in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League, snapped an eight-game losing streak.
Holden Spence led the Pirates with 15 points. Senior Miles Dix, who closed his prep career getting to play alongside his younger brother, Marcus, scored 13. Andres Martinez chipped in with 10 points.
Juniors Ian Bulfin and Garrett Koontz each had 15 points and six rebounds for the Pumas (4-16, 1-11), the seventh-place finisher in the PCAL’s Cypress Division. Senior Thomas May chipped in with eight points.
Girls basketball
PCS 44, at Harbor 25 >> Sophomore forward Kat Buckley scored double digits in every game she played this year, including 29 in the Pumas’ win over the Pirates in the teams’ nonleague contest Tuesday to close the regular season.
Senior point guard Addie Payne had 11 points, five blocks, and four assists. Sophomore guard Nina Gramkowski scored six points for the Pumas (13-11, 7-7), who will compete in the upcoming CCS playoffs.
Harbor finished its season at 2-20.
At Pajaro Valley 45, Santa Catalina 11 >> Monique Ayala scored 18 points, and the Grizzlies won their regular-season finale on senior night to close PCAL Cypress Division play Tuesday.
Liz Zamora scored 15 points for the Grizzlies (5-18, 3-11), who finished in sixth place. They led 14-0 after the first quarter and 23-2 at the half.
Karely Alvarado chipped in with nine points for Pajaro Valley.
The Cougars (1-18, 1-13) finished their season in eighth place.
College baseball
At Solano 23, Cabrillo 0 >> The Seahawks committed seven errors on defense and were held to one hit on offense while suffering one of the worst losses in program history Tuesday.
Truett Ross had the Seahawks’ lone hit, a single in the seventh inning. He was also hit by a pitch in the fourth inning. Teammate Carlos Cruz drew one of the team’s four walks and stole a base.
Cabrillo (3-7) used six pitchers and they gave up six walks and 24 hits, including six extra-base hits.
Rolando Ramos had two hits, including a two-run home run for the Falcons (2-7). He a walk, finished with three RBI, and scored twice.
Peyten Czekalewski pitched 6 1/3 innings and earned the win. Anthony Sullivan pitched three innings and took the loss.
Cabrillo hosts San Mateo (5-5) on Thursday at 2 p.m.
College softball
Cabrillo drops DH >> The Seahawks were swept in a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday, losing both five inning games 10-0 and 13-4 to visiting American River.
Maddi Burry had one of Cabrillo’s four hits and a stolen base in its first loss.
Felesha Lapenske earned the win, and Alanna Poklong took the loss.
Cameron Llamas had two of the Seahawks’ nine hits in the second game. Brooklyn Llamas had a hit and two RBI.
Addison Susag earned the win, and Ava Servin took the loss.
ARC improved to 7-4-1 overall.
Cabrillo (0-11-1) hosts Reedley (3-6) in a nonconference doubleheader on Friday, with games at noon and 2 p.m.
