Cena sits in Wimbledon Royal Box
John Cena. Olivia Rodrigo. Dave Grohl. Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas. There was as much star power — or maybe even more? — in the Royal Box at Wimbledon as there was down below on the Centre Court grass on Wednesday. And that was on an afternoon that featured two-time defending men’s champion Carlos Alcaraz and No. 1-ranked woman Aryna Sabalenka both winning matches at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament’s main stadium to reach the third round. The seats in the Royal Box behind one of the baselines are by invitation only, and there was quite a list of celebrities on hand for Day 3 of competition. “I was trying not to look today,” Sabalenka said about the collection of boldfaced names, explaining that she might be distracted while competing. Cena, the 17-time WWE Champion and movie star, sat next to Rodrigo, fresh off headlining at music festival Glastonbury while on tour for her GUTS album. Rodrigo chatted at one point with former England soccer coach Roy Hodgson. Grohl, a member of the rock bands Foo Fighters and Nirvana, made an appearance, too, as did the married couple Chopra and Jonas.
Woodland gets Ryder Cup duties
Former U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland will make his first Ryder Cup appearance this year, announced Wednesday as the fifth and final assistant to U.S. captain Keegan Bradley for the matches at Bethpage Black. Woodland joins Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker, Kevin Kisner and Webb Simpson as U.S. assistants when the Americans try to win back the cup from Europe on Sept. 26-28. The assistants could take on extra significance this year as Bradley decides whether to be the first playing captain since 1963. Bradley won the Travelers Championship two weeks ago, giving him more wins in the last year than any American except Scottie Scheffler. Two months remain before the six players qualify, followed by six captain’s picks. “As a major champion and someone who is still competing at a high level, he is well aware of the demands of performing on golf’s biggest stages,” Bradley said of Woodland, who won the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. “He will be a valuable leader for us over the coming months and throughout the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.”
Fresh start for Miller in Carolina
K’Andre Miller kept his phone off and avoided social media in recent weeks with his future uncertain after five seasons with the Rangers. Now, he’s eager to jump into the Hurricanes’ aggressive system. The Hurricanes acquired the 25-year-old former first-round pick to bolster their blue line and gave him a long-term contract Tuesday, the first official day of free agency. He joins a team that has made seven straight playoff trips and is coming off a third trip to the Eastern Conference final in that span. “They have such a fast team,” Miller said Wednesday in a Zoom call with reporters. “They get up and down the ice in a fast motion and they do everything as a team. It’s a fun group to watch and they’ve had a lot of success recently. So I’m excited to join that style of game, and they have a great team over there.” The Hurricanes project the 6-foot-5, 210-pound Miller as a strong fit with his size and skating ability. The Hurricanes are betting Miller is still on the rise, handing him an eight-year contract paying an average annual value of $7.5 million through the 2032-33 season. — Associated Press
