The Boulder community can now pass “Go” and submit ideas for a Boulder edition of the classic board game, Monopoly.

On Tuesday, “Monopoly: Boulder Edition” — a Boulder-themed version of the game — was announced to be in development. Top Trumps USA, the company behind the official regional editions of Monopoly, is planning to release the game in July of 2025.

Before the game comes out, Boulder community members are invited to suggest Boulder businesses, nonprofits and landmarks to serve as squares on the Monopoly board. Ideas can be emailed to game makers at boulder@toptrumps.com.

“It’s really important that people send in what they want to see, because this board is for them,” said Jennifer Tripsea, a sales executive with Top Trumps USA.

In Monopoly, players are tasked with buying property, developing land and trying to bankrupt their opponents. A Colorado Springs edition of Monopoly was also announced this year, and is set to come out in the spring.

Tripsea said Top Trumps USA wants Boulder retailers to carry the game when it debuts next year, encouraging buyers to shop locally.

“When we’re creating these city editions, we look to the community for suggestions,” Tripsea said. “Essentially, when you are playing the Boulder edition next summer, we want you to feel that you are traveling around Boulder. It really is (meant) to immortalize all of the locations that everybody loves.”

Tuesday’s announcement took place on a parking garage roof on Pearl Street’s East End, which offered an expansive view of downtown Boulder and the Flatirons.

“It’s a great panorama of a lot of the destinations that might be included in the game,” said Cris Jones, director of Boulder’s Community Vitality department. “Anything that celebrates what makes Boulder special is special to us.”

Boulder city manager Nuria Rivera-Vandermyde said she first learned about “Monopoly: Boulder Edition” a few weeks ago. She’s looking forward to seeing what people want featured in the game, and to see that ultimately shared with the world.

“What an amazing opportunity to lift up some of the great things about our city,” Rivera-Vandermyde said.

To submit a business, nonprofit or landmark, there’s no requirement to be a current Boulder resident. Anyone who has spent time in the city is welcome to share their favorite Boulder places.

“They know what’s special about our community,” Rivera-Vandermyde said. “We’re excited to hear what they think makes Boulder that very special place that we all know and love.”
