Body retrieved from Fox River in Carpentersville
People fishing at the Fox River Shores Forest Preserve early Sunday morning found a body that authorities believe may be a missing 21-year-old Carpentersville man, police said.
Jesus Maldonado was reported missing Friday, police said.
Carpentersville firefighters and police were called to the forest preserve at 701 Williams Road about 7:30 a.m. for a body in the river, police Chief Patrick Hoey said. It was taken to the Kane County coroner’s office for positive identification, he said.
“We think this is our missing person, but the coroner was not able to make a positive identification (at the scene),” Hoey said.
Maldonado’s family has been notified, police said.
The Kane County coroner’s office has scheduled an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

City handing out free Fourth of July yard signs
The city of Elgin is distributing free yard signs to the public that promote neighborly Independence Day celebrations over the weekend and discourage the use of fireworks.
Available in English on one side and Spanish on the reverse, the signs can be picked up from the lobby of Elgin City Hall at 150 Dexter Court from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.
Police and fire officials have been encouraging residents to not set off illegal fireworks because of the dangers they pose and to instead attend the city’s fireworks display downtown on Monday.
The event also features free music and access to food trucks at Festival Park starting at 4 p.m.
The fireworks display starts at dusk.

Metra plans survey to collect ridership input
Metra has launched a survey to solicit input from riders and the public about proposed revisions to its mission and vision statements and about new strategic goals for the agency.
Feedback will be used to help create Metra’s next five-year strategic plan, officials said.
The survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/r/MetraStrategicPlan
“With the pandemic happening and greater funding options now available, much has changed in the public transportation environment since the last strategic plan was adopted in 2017,” said Metra CEO/Executive Jim Derwinski in a news release about the survey.
The new strategic plan will be developed this summer, officials said. Metra will then share a draft plan with the Metra board later this fall and offer an opportunity for public comment on the draft.
After incorporating feedback on the draft plan, a final plan will be written and presented to the Metra board for adoption in early 2023, officials said.
