Keys for the Vikings
• There is no team in the NFL that star receiver Justin Jefferson has produced against at a higher rate. On that note, it would serve the Vikings well to involve Jefferson early and often against the Lions, hoping he can put together another masterpiece. If the Vikings are able to get Jefferson going, it would more than likely open up everything else for the offense. That could be very important with the status of veteran running back Aaron Jones unclear.
• It’s imperative that the Vikings stop the run on defense. That could be easier said than done against arguably the best offensive line in the NFL. That said, the Vikings must do everything in their power not to let speedy running back Jahmyr Gibbs and powerful running back David Montgomery get going.
Keys for the Lions
• How are the Lions going to generate pressure without injured star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson? That’s the biggest question for them heading into this game. After signing a lucrative contract this week, defensive tackle Alim McNeill needs to step up and generate pressure in the trenches. Though it won’t make up for the loss of Hutchinson, McNeill could potentially wreak havoc if he’s able to get into a rhythm rushing the passer.
• The difference could come down to veteran quarterback Jared Goff and his ability to make plays while under pressure. He’s more than capable of slicing and dicing a defense, either by throwing to receiver Amon Ra St. Brown running over the middle, or receiver Jameson Williams running deep downfield. Can he do that with Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores blitzing him into oblivion? That remains to be seen.
