The Little East Conference has announced its weekly honorees in baseball and UMass Dartmouth student-athlete Brett Baker was recognized.
The junior center fielder was named the conference’s Player of the Week after an outstanding effort that saw him help lift the Corsairs to a 3-1 week, including a doubleheader sweep to open their LEC schedule.
Baker, who hails from Chelmsford, batted .615 last week as a starter in all four games. He went 8-for-13 at the plate, hitting four doubles with a home run to his credit. In addition to five runs scored, he added five runs batted in and went 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts. The junior opened the week with a 2-for-4 effort, posting a double, a run scored and a stolen base in a 7-6 walk-off win over Wheaton on Tuesday. He then had a 2-for-3 effort in a tough loss to Roger Williams, adding another run scored with a double and an RBI.
In the Corsairs’ conference opener on Saturday, Baker went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two doubles and a stolen base as UMD defeated Western Connecticut State, 7-1 in game one. He then posted a 2-for-3 clip with a run scored and four RBI as he hit a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning. He also stole his third base of the week in the 10-2 win over the Wolves in game two.
Boys hockey
The Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches Association Senior All-Star Games were held Sunday in Worcester.
The North girls defeated the South 4-0 and the North boys skated to a 6-3 win.
In the boys game, state champion Billerica was represented on the North squad by stars Danny Viscione and Nolan Dawson. The pair, who combined on the game-winning overtime goal to defeat Canton, shined.
Viscione scored a pair of goals, while Dawson tallied once.
Seamus Tattan of Catholic Memorial cut the deficit to 3-2, but Viscione netted his second minutes later to re-establish the two-goal lead.
“It was fun, getting to meet guys I hadn’t met before,” Viscione told the Boston Herald. “It was definitely cool getting to know those guys.”
Dawson scored a few minutes later to make it 5-2 for the North and said the team was really gelling at this point in the game.
“We had a great group,” Dawson told the Herald. “Good balance, great goalies in the net, was definitely fun.”
College basketball
One of the greatest seasons in the long and successful history of Bentley University women’s basketball drew to a close Monday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh.
It was a back-and-forth contest, with a dozen lead changes and seven ties before Union University (Tenn.) closed with a 11-2 run over the final five minutes to prevail, 80-66, and snap the Falcons’ 29-game winning streak.
Senior forward Kylie DuCharme (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington HS) ended her Bentley career on a high note. DuCharme posted a double-double, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds. No player scored more points than DuCharme and her rebound total was tops in the game.
