Players from Liverpool and Portugal’s national team joined family and friends for the funeral of their teammate Diogo Jota and his brother on Saturday.

The service was held in the Portuguese town of Gondomar two days after they died in a car crash in Spain.

Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk and several teammates attended. As did Portugal coach Roberto Martínez and Manchester City players Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias.

Jota and brother André Silva were found dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain early Thursday after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed on an isolated stretch of highway.

England drop women’s Euro opener to France

England began the defense of its Women’s European Championship title by losing to France 2-1.

Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore scored two quickfire goals towards the end of the first half as France recorded a ninth straight win and stunned the defending champion.

Keira Walsh reduced the deficit three minutes from time but it wasn’t enough to prevent England from becoming the first titleholder to lose its opening match at a women’s Euros.

PSG, Real Madrid win in Club World Cup quarters

Désiré Doué scored in the 78th minute to send Paris Saint-Germain a step closer to another trophy with a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup.

The game was marred by a gruesome injury to young Bayern star Jamal Musiala, who appeared to break his left ankle late in the first half.

PSG will face Real Madrid, who defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in the second quarterfinal of the day on first-half goals from Gonzalo Garcia and Fran Garcia and a late strike by Kylian Mbappe.

St. Paul snaps losing streak at Gwinnett

The Saints ended their four-game losing streak with a 3-1 win at Gwinnett.

St. Paul scored all of its runs in the fifth inning, including a solo home run from Edouard Julien and held the host Stripers scoreless after their lone tally in the opening frame.

Starting pitcher Randy Dobnak won his first game of the year with St. Paul, improving to 1-5 with five innings of two-hit, one-run ball.

The Saints wrap their series with Gwinnett today with a 12:05 first pitch scheduled.

Rockets trade Whitmore to Wizards for picks

Cam Whitmore is being traded by the Houston Rockets to the Washington Wizards for a pair of second-round picks.

Whitmore, a Maryland native, averaged 10.8 points in his two seasons with the Rockets — who took him with the No. 20 pick in the 2023 draft.

Grizzlies dealing Huff to Pacers for draft capital

Eastern Conference champion Indiana, in need of a center after losing Myles Turner to Milwaukee, has agreed to acquire Jay Huff from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for second-round draft capital.

The 7-foot-1 Huff averaged 6.9 points in 64 games with Memphis this past season.

Thompson takes John Deere Classic lead

Davis Thompson made a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to break out of a logjam that at one point featured 10 players tied for the lead, giving him a 4-under 67 and a one-shot lead in the John Deere Classic.

His final birdie put him at 15-under 198, one shot ahead of Campbell, Max Homa, Emiliano Grillo and David Lipsky, all carding a 68.

Van Gisbergen earns pole slot for Grant Park 165

Van Gisbergen has won the pole for Sunday’s Grant Park 165. The 36-year-old New Zealander turned a lap at 88.338 mph on a tricky 2.2-mile course.

The Trackhouse Racing driver will be joined on the front row by Michael McDowell, who grabbed the second slot at 87.879 mph. Carson Hocevar (87.824 mph), Tyler Reddick (87.779 mph) and Chase Briscoe (87.734 mph) rounded out the top five.

Verstappen wins British Grand Prix qualifying

Max Verstappen snatched pole position for the British Grand Prix as his title rivals from McLaren made small but costly errors.

Red Bull Racing’s lead driver sacrificed grip for speed and went fastest by 0.103 of a second to beat Oscar Piastri’s time. Lando Norris was third, .015 back.

Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, a record nine-time winner of his home race, had to settle for fifth.

With George Russell fourth for Mercedes, that made three British drivers in the top five, but none on the front row.

Philipsen wins Tour de France opening stage

Jasper Philipsen has won the opening stage of the Tour de France in a sprint to the line in Lille.

Defending champion Tadej Pogacar finished safely. Pogacar is looking to win the race for a fourth time.

The stage took riders on a 185-kilometer (115-mile) route starting and ending in Lille. Pogacar was 18th and two-time Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard 20th.

This month’s race stays in France for the duration of the three weeks with no stages abroad like previous years.

Sunday’s second stage is a slightly hilly 209-kilometer trek from Lauwin-Planque to Boulogne-sur-Mer. The race ends on July 27 in Paris.

Kipyegon, Chebet set world records in Ore.

Kenyans Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet set world records at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore.

Kipyegon, a three-time Olympic champion in the event, finished the 1,500 in 3 minutes, 48.68 seconds, besting her own record of 3:49.04 in the event set before last year’s Paris Games.

Chebet became the first women to run under 14 minutes in the 5,000, finishing in 13:58.06 to surpass Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay’s 2023 mark of 14:00.21.
