San Pedro, CA

Augustinus (Gus) van Hoorn, former ship chandler, artist, and world traveler, departed on his final voyage on Friday, October 24, with family by his side.

Gus was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands and lived in San Pedro for the past 60 years. He leaves behind his stepchildren Catherine (Katy) Ostheimer and Michael Naylor, as well as five step-grandchildren. He also has several nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews living in the Netherlands, France, Canada, Australia, Columbia and the US who have fond memories of "Ome Guus."

His daughter from an earlier marriage, Margaret van Hoorn, his wife, Estella Naylor van Hoorn, and stepdaughter Mary Naylor predeceased him.

Gus travelled the world as a merchant seaman before moving to the LA area, where he worked in a local ship chandlery before operating Standard & Hall Ship Supply with Estella. In addition to travel, he also enjoyed his regular aquacise classes at the San Pedro YMCA and spending hours poring over art in a museum, and creating art on his many overseas trips and at Angels' Gate in San Pedro.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to UNICEF, or the Estella Naylor Van Hoorn Foundation at Envhf.com.
