


Redwood High clinched the top seed and a first-round bye for the league playoffs and an undefeated regular-season run through the MCAL with Thursday’s physical 15-8 victory over powerhouse San Marin on a blustery day in Larkspur.
Phoebe Miller led the Giants (14-3, 8-0 MCAL) with five goals, an assist and two draw controls, while Lucy Jeffers won five draw controls and scored a goal. Lucy Miller registered three goals and four assists for the Giants, whose strategic attack produced 25 shots on net. Claire Johnson had three goals for Redwood, which also got a pair of goals from Presley Pewitt and one from Riley Buck.
Redwood struck first on Jeffers’ goal, but San Marin turned up the heat to take a 4-2 lead in the first quarter. The Giants rallied to score three quick goals for a 5-4 lead at the end of the first. Redwood was just getting warmed up after taking an 8-6 lead into the break, while San Marin struggled to control the ball.
Alex Chamberlain broke through a tough Redwood defense for five San Marin goals. Izzy Concoules, Abby Bartholo and Peyton Chamberlain each added a goal. The No. 4 seed Mustangs (10-5, 5-3) are scheduled to open the MCAL playoffs against No. 5 Branson on Tuesday.
Boys tennis
San Marin High swept doubles play and split singles to earn a 5-2 victory over Terra Linda on Thursday and secure the fourth seed for the MCAL playoffs. The Mustangs’ Oliver Pool beat the Trojans’ Aryaveer Singh 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Alexander Christfort battled to a 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 win at No. 3 singles for San Marin (10-6) The Trojans’ Rupert Atkins rallied for a 6-7, 7-5, 10-7 win over Shawn Bested at No. 4 singles, and Bhuvan Medidi also won for Terra Linda (4-12) at No. 2 singles.
• Redwood High wrapped up an undefeated league season with Thursday’s 6-1 victory over Tam. Casra Afsharipour, Tugdual Ricordel and Tito Adams earned singles wins for the Giants (16-0). The Red-tailed Hawks’ Witt Bulger held off Julian Zhang for a dramatic 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 win at No. 1 singles. Tam (9-7) heads into the MCAL playoffs as the fifth seed.
• Branson swept past Novato, 7-0, to wrap up the regular season on Thursday. Finn Higgins, Griffin Cooper, Chase Hoeveler and Ryan Kafayi won singles matches for the Bulls (13-3), the second seed for the MCAL playoffs.
Boys golf
Senior Jay Nagpal aced the eighth hole at Meadow Club on Thursday as the Branson School tallied a 198 to edge Redwood (199) and Archie Williams (209). Nagpal and Jack Hilleboe led the Bulls with rounds of 36. The Giants’ Beckman Watrous turned in a 35 for the low round of the day, and Asa Elder’s 39 led the Peregrine Falcons.
• Dylan Siegel’s 3-over 39 at Presidio Golf Course led Marin Academy to a 161-177 victory over University on Thursday. The undefeated Wildcats (10-0, 8-0 BCL West) got 40s from Charlie Hansen and Charlie Wilhelm, while freshman Demir Kochman shot a career-best 42.
• Low medalist Kyle Farbstein shot a 40 at Marin Country Club to pace San Marin to a 223-229 victory over Novato on Thursday. Gianni Zucconi carded a 41 for the Hornets in the final match before the MCAL tournament on May 1 at StoneTree.
Prep baseball
Junior Julian Oliver hit a pair of doubles to help power Novato to a 7-3 victory over Branson at College of Marin on Thursday. The Bulls did all their damage in the bottom of the first inning, before the Hornets (10-8, 6-6 MCAL) responded with a four-run fourth inning. Oliver plated four runs for Novato, which also got a solid effort on the mound from junior Griffin Vorhaus, who struck out nine batters in a complete-game effort.
Senior Tom Lardner was 2-for-4 and scored a run for the Bulls (6-11, 1-11), who managed five hits against Vorhaus.
College baseball
College of Marin fell into an early six-run hole and a late rally came up just short in an 8-7 road loss to Los Medanos on Thursday.
The result knocked COM (26-12-1, 16-4 Bay Valley) a full game behind both Laney and Los Medanos, both 17-3 in conference and winners of nine and 11 games in a row, respectively. The Mariners end the regular season with a home game against Los Medanos at 1 p.m. Friday while Laney faces last-place Contra Costa (3-31, 1-19).
COM trailed 6-0 after two innings but scored five times in the fifth inning to climb back into the game. Former Novato High standout Derek Bartram drove in two runs, as did Dante Caiati.
