Donald Trump is going to the Super Bowl in New Orleans on Sunday, the first sitting president to do so.

The U.S. Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting the president, said in a statement Tuesday that it has had staff on the ground for days preparing for his visit. Trump will watch the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles.

“Extensive planning and coordination have been in place to ensure the safety of all attendees, players, and staff,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement. “Security measures have been further enhanced this year, given that this will be the first time a sitting President of the United States will attend the event.”

Kicker Crosby retires >> Former Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby, who didn’t play in the NFL this season, is retiring from football.

The 40-year-old Crosby announced his decision during his radio show on Milwaukee’s 105.7 The Fan. He ends his career as the Packers’ all-time leading scorer after kicking for Green Bay from 2007-22.

NBA

76ers trade Martin to Mavs >> The Dallas Mavericks are acquiring Caleb Martin in a trade with Philadelphia that sends Quentin Grimes to the 76ers.

The Mavericks made the move three days after the seismic trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis in a rare swap of superstars.

Martin and Grimes both were in their first seasons with their teams, who were playing each other Tuesday night in Philadelphia.

Celebrity All-Stars announced >> Streamer Kai Cenat, comedian-creator Druski and musical artists Mickey Guyton and Shaboozey were announced as participants in the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, while multi-platinum rapper 2 Chainz was named a coach.

The game will be played Feb. 14 at Oakland Arena as part of the NBA’s All-Star weekend.

MLB

Orioles add OF Laureano on $4M, 1-year deal >> Ramón Laureano and Baltimore agreed on a $4 million, one-year contract in another addition to the Orioles’ increasingly crowded outfield.

The deal includes a team option for 2026. The 30-year-old hit .259 with 11 home runs and 33 RBIs last year for Atlanta and Cleveland.

Baltimore lost right fielder Anthony Santander to free agency, but the Orioles have added Tyler O’Neill, Dylan Carlson and now Laureano to their outfield — which also includes holdovers Cedric Mullins, Colton Cowser and Heston Kjerstad.

Astros to retire Wagner’s jersey number >> Houston Astros all-time saves leader Billy Wagner will have his jersey number retired, an honor that coincides with his induction into the Hall of Fame.

Wagner’s No. 13 will be the 10th number retired by the Astros during a ceremony Aug. 16. He’ll be inducted July 27 in Cooperstown with Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, Dave Parker and Dick Allen.

Wagner, a three-time All-Star, saved 225 games for the Astros from 1995-2003.

Gold Glove winner goes to Rangers Spring training on Minor league deal >> Two-time Gold Glove shortstop Nick Ahmed and outfielder Sam Haggerty will go to major league spring training with the Texas Rangers after agreeing to minor league contracts.

Ahmed, who will turn 35 on March 15, started games at shortstop last season for San Francisco, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego after playing for Arizona from 2014-23, when he became the Diamondbacks’ career leader with 789 starts at shortstop.

Grand Slam winner Halep retires >> Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep announced her retirement from tennis at age 33 after a first-round loss at a tournament in her home country of Romania, ending an injury-filled comeback from a doping suspension.

“I don’t know if it’s with sadness or joy — I think I’m feeling both — but my soul is at peace with this decision, and I’ve always been realistic with myself. My body can no longer handle as much as it used to, to get me where I probably once was,” Halep said, using a microphone to address the crowd in Cluj, Romania, following her 6-1, 6-1 loss to Lucia Bronzetti in the Transylvania Open.

It was the first match of the year for Halep, who reached No. 1 in the WTA rankings for the first time in 2017 but is now 870th and was given a wild-card invitation to play in Romania.

NASCAR

New rule introduces reward for fastest lap >> NASCAR introduced a new rule that will award one point to the team and driver with the fastest single lap in each race.

The “Xfinity Fastest Lap” was added as part of a contract renewal between NASCAR and Xfinity. The new deal awards a point for the fastest lap in all three of NASCAR’s national series, continues Xfinity’s role as entitlement sponsor of the second-tier series through 2025 and includes a multiyear agreement for Xfinity to extend its premium partnership with the Cup Series.

Horse Racing

373 horses nominated for Triple Crown series >> A total of 373 3-year-olds have been made eligible to compete in this year’s Triple Crown series during the early nomination period.

Led by Citizen Bull, last year’s 2-year-old champion male, each of the horses was nominated through a $600 payment to compete in the Kentucky Derby on May 3, Preakness on May 17 and Belmont Stakes at Saratoga on June 7.

This year’s total is a 7.8% increase from last year’s 346 early nominations.

College football

Big 12 to start season in Ireland >> The 30th season of Big 12 football will kick off with a conference game in Dublin, Ireland.

That season-opening game overseas between Kansas State and Iowa State on Aug. 23 had been announced previously, but the Big 12 released the rest of its conference football schedule on Tuesday. Each of the 16 teams will play nine conference games.
