A 36-year-old man called 911 Friday night and reported he’d shot his roommate in his South St. Paul apartment, according to a murder charge filed Monday.

Medics pronounced Michael M. Schille, 72, dead in the apartment on 12th Avenue off Thompson Avenue.

Police arrested Jacob John Audie at the scene. Audie gave a statement to police, saying he lived with Schille for the last year or two. He said he helped care for the older man and clean the apartment.

Audie said he used Schille’s AR-15 rifle to shoot the man once in the cheek area in Schille’s bedroom, according to the criminal complaint, which doesn’t give a motive for the shooting.

He said he unloaded the magazine and put it on the table and took a round out of the chamber and placed it by the couch, which matched what police found in the apartment.

South St. Paul police responded to Audie’s report of the shooting about 8:50 p.m. Friday. He’d reported in his 911 call that the gun was on the couch in the apartment. He was in the building’s parking lot, holding his phone, and police took him into custody.

Schille was found sitting on the couch in the back bedroom with a television remote in his hand; he had a gunshot wound to the side of his face.

The Dakota County Attorney’s Office charged Audie with second-degree intentional murder, not premeditated.

Audie, whose address in the complaint is listed in Hudson, Wis., is being held in the Dakota County jail. He made his first court appearance Monday; an attorney wasn’t listed for him in the court file as of the afternoon.
