


Ivy Tech receives Cisco Golden Bridge Award
Ivy Tech Community College recently announced new recognition and honor as Cisco Networking System’s 2023 Golden Bridge Award recipient, according to a release.
The Golden Bridge Award recognizes Ivy Tech for providing students with the skills needed to work in the Information Technology field and the ability to earn industry-recognized certifications, the release said. Through the Ivy Tech Valparaiso campus Routing Switching Certificate program, the College participates in the State Earn and Learn (SEAL) program, a 10-month program that is a part of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
Every Be the Bridge Award winner has excelled in one or more of the following categories: Inclusive Futures, Global Reach, Impacting Lives, Learning Innovation, and Partnerships, the release said.
PNW adding new doctoral degree offering
Purdue University Northwest recently received approval from the Indiana Higher Learning Commission to offer advanced degrees in Psychology, according to a release.
PNW plans to offer a Doctor of Psychology degree, which is an applied doctoral program intended to prepare students as both practitioners and scholars to address local needs for mental health resources in Northwest Indiana, a release said. A master’s degree in Psychology will also be added to the PNW curriculum.
PNW’s program will become the university’s third doctoral program, joining its Doctor of Nursing Practice and Doctor of Technology.
NWIIWA Launches New Ambassador Committee
The Northwest Influential Women Association (NWIIWA) is going to be expanding its mission to foster career connections for women with the addition of a new Ambassador Committee, according to a release.
The new committee will be chaired by Alyssa Gawlinski, managing director of national events and marketing with RE Journals. Gawlinski is an experienced business development professional known for her skills in coordinating networking events and boosting relationships among her target audiences, the release said.
New doctor joins Franciscan Physician Network
Dr. Annette Abraham, infectious disease and internal medicine doctor, is now part of the Franciscan Physician Network and is accepting new patients in Michigan City, according to a release.
Abraham completed her training at Government Medical College in Kottayam, Kerala, India. She completed her residency in internal medicine at John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County in Chicago. Abraham’s fellowship training was in infectious diseases at RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago, the release said.
Her clinical interests are HIV, bone, joint and cardiovascular infections, travel medicine and tropical infections and central nervous system infections, the release said. Abraham is fluent in Malayalam. For information, call 219-861-5539
Caregiver Awards announced
Northwest Health - Porter honored two caregivers in August: Jennifer Carpenter, MSN, RN, PCCN, was the recipient of the DAISY award for exceptional nursing and Wil Ortiz, a security officer, was the recipient of the PETALS award for outstanding support professionals, according to a release.
Carpenter, a veteran nurse at Northwest Health — Porter, was nominated by a co-worker who shared that Carpenter is always there to support, problem solve, and trouble-shoot in a wide variety of situations, the release said.
Ortiz was nominated by a patient’s daughter who visited the hospital for many days to help manage the care of her elderly mother who was staying in the progressive care unit, the release said.
Community nurses make Cancer Resource Centre donation
During this year’s National Nurses Week, Community Hospital raised nearly $11,000 for the Cancer Resource Centre (CRC) in Munster, according to a release.
To raise the $10,998, Community Hospital’s Patient Care Services staff raffled themed baskets, the release said. Community Hospital’s Patient Care Services has been hosting the Nurses Week basket raffle since 2008, raising nearly $300,000 total for the CRC.

Northwest Medical Group specialists move to Knox location
The new Northwest Medical Group office building in Knox will house the specialists who previously saw patients in the group’s primary care location at 104 E. Culver Road, according to a release.
Patients will begin visiting the new location Sept. 1 at 402 W. Culver Road.
The Northwest Medical Group specialists now seeing patients at the new location include: Cardiology (219-324-0014), Gastroenterology (219-324-0878), Hematology and Oncology (219-326-0943), Orthopedics (219-326-2663) and Urology (219-464-1001), the release said.
