



Joel Quenneville is returning to the NHL with the Anaheim Ducks for his first head coaching job since the second-winningest coach in league history resigned and was banned from the league for his handling of a sexual assault scandal.
The 66-year-old Quenneville was hired by Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek for his first coaching job since his resignation from the Florida Panthers 3 1/2 years ago in the wake of his handling of the sexual assault scandal during his tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Before his departure, Quenneville spent parts of 25 NHL seasons behind the benches of St. Louis, Colorado, Chicago and Florida.

Loons to host St. Louis City in U.S. Open Cup
After defeating Louisville City Wednesday, Minnesota United will host St. Louis City SC in the round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup.
The Loons announced that the matchup will take place at Allianz Field in St. Paul at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21.

The Premier League club advanced 5-1 on aggregate to set up a May 28 title match against Real Betis, which prevailed in extra time for a 4-3 aggregate win over Fiorentina to reach its first European final.

Gasper walks it off as Saints win slugfest
Catcher Mickey Gasper launched a three-run homer to walk off visiting Buffalo in a 13-10 Saints victory at CHS Field.
St. Paul rallied from multiple-run deficits on multiple occasions, including by scoring three runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, to improve to 18-14 on the season.
Reliever Anthony Misiewicz was charged with a blown save for giving up a 10-8 Saints’ lead in the top of the ninth, but was awarded the win in the bottom of the frame after Gasper’s blast.
St. Paul hosts the Bisons through the weekend, with tonight’s game starting at 6:37 p.m.

Ryan announces he’s retiring after 36 years
University of Minnesota Senior Associate Athletics Director Marc Ryan has announced his upcoming retirement.
Ryan, who has been a staple with Gopher Athletics for 36 years, is the most tenured employee in the department. He will retire on June 15, 2025, and will finish his career at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which are held June 11-14, 2025, in Eugene, Ore.
Ryan is the sport administrator for nine teams: women’s cross country, men’s cross country, women’s swimming & diving, men’s swimming & diving, women’s indoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, gymnastics and softball.
Samedy makes USA Volleyball roster
Former Gopher Stephanie Samedy was one of the 30 players named to the roster for the U.S. Women’s National Team as it prepares for the 2025 Volleyball Nations League (VNL), the world’s premier annual international tournament.
Samedy helped the Gophers win a Big Ten title while making three Sweet Sixteens, a Final Four and an Elite Eight during her tenure.
Women’s hockey adds Jordan from B.C.
Molly Jordan, a junior defenseman from from Betlin, Conn., has joined the Minnesota women’s hockey team.
Jordan transfers to the Gophers from Boston College, where she tallied 41 points in 69 career games.

Bird appointed managing director of USWNT
Five-time Olympic champion Sue Bird will become the first managing director of the U.S. Women’s National Team.
Bird’s appointment marks a major change in the way the organization creates its roster and coaching staff.
Before the change, a committee made those decisions, but now in a move similar to what the USA men’s national team does, Bird will be the one responsible for putting things together.

Mitchell takes Truist lead with course record round
Keith Mitchell led a birdie spree at the Truist Championship, shooting a career-best 9-under 61 to shatter the course record at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
Mitchell was bogey-free and owned a one-shot lead over Denny McCarthy. Colin Morikawa, Rickie Fowler, Sepp Straka and Akshay Bhatia shot 63.
Rory McIlroy, making his first individual start since completing the career grand slam at the Masters, had a 66 and was one of 64 players who beat par.
Thitkul cards 8-under 64 to lead Liberty National
Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand feels so much better when she sees putts going in, and it was a happy occasion at the Mizuho Americas Open. She took only 26 putts, eight of them for birdie, in a clean start of 8-under 64 to lead by two shots.
Celine Boutier of France ran off five straight birdies in the middle of her round to account for not taking advantage of the par 5s.
Boutier was at 66 with Hye-Jin Choi of South Korea and Lindy Duncan.
