The boys and girls track and field season is underway.

The 10 athletes below aren’t necessarily the top athletes in the area. But all of them should be intriguing to follow throughout the spring season.

Rocco Culpepper, Niwot boys: He won the 4A 800 and 1,600 at last spring’s state track and field meet. He was also a part of the boys team that won Nike Cross Nationals in December.

Tanner Kaufman, Frederick boys: The senior didn’t run the 400 as a junior, but in his first try this spring, he posted the state’s third-fastest time (49.61) in a win at the Golden Eagle Invitational earlier this month. He also has top 20 times in the state this season in the 800 (1:59.31) and 1,600 (4:31.53).

Rylee Klatt, Mead girls: The junior finished sixth in both the 4A 100- and 200-meter dash at last year’s state track and field meet. She’s inside the top 10 in both events this season, too.

Teagan Malcolm, Longmont boys: Malcolm won the 300-meter hurdles crown last season and looks to become a two-time champion in the event. During the week of March 24, he was ranked No. 3 in the entire state — across all classifications — in both the 300 hurdles and 110 hurdles.

Rylan Mills, Jefferson Academy boys: Mills, finishing 12th in the 3A 800-meter run last spring, also played an important piece in the Jaguars boys’ state-runner up honors in cross country in October, finishing ninth.

Ethan Nuttall, Monarch boys: His teammate Tyler Rowan, who graduated, won 5A pole vault last spring, while he finished third. At the Coyote Invite earlier this month, he and Peak to Peak’s Ethan Rathke both jumped 15 feet, 2 inches — fourth-best in the state this season.

Addy Ritzenhein, Niwot girls: The record-breaking junior already has state titles and a cross country national champ to her name. She returns as one of several girls state champs from their 2024 team, including individual winners in seniors Jade West (shot put and discus) and Reese Kasper (300 hurdles).

Cloe Ruth, Silver Creek girls: This spring will be it for the Raptors’ decorated distance runner. Ruth, committed to the University of Utah, finished inside the top 10 in three running events last spring and took second at the 4A cross country meet in the fall.

Claire Tannehill, Holy Family girls: Tannehill was the 3A state runner-up in the 100 and 200 last year. The Tigers moved up to 4A this season.

Sierra Wall, Fairview girls: Wall’s coach, Tricia Vieth, believes that she has what it takes to break some school records in the distance events this spring.w
