A former Warren police officer has pleaded no contest to the two criminal charges over his alleged unnecessary Tasing of a truck driver during a Center Line traffic stop.

Dammeon Player, 51, entered the pleas Monday in Macomb County Circuit Court in Mount Clemens to the charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and common law offenses on allegations he assaulted the driver of a semi tractor-trailer during a traffic stop July 20, 2023, according to court records.

The charges to which he pleaded were the original offenses with which he was charged

He is scheduled to be sentenced June 16 by Judge Michael Servitto.

The common-law offenses maximum penalty is five years in prison, and the assault charges is punishable by up to four years.

Player’s attorneys declined to comment.

The sentencing-guideline range could include probation as a potential sentence. Player has no prior criminal record.

At a previous court hearing, attorneys for Player and a second officer said the truck driver was non-compliant when police conducted a traffic stop, and refused to provide his driver’s license or step out of the truck when asked.

Immediately after the driver was taken to the ground due to noncompliance, Player shot him with the electric stun gun, according to court testimony. A few seconds later, Player deployed the stun gun on the man again.

Macomb County Assistant Prosecutor Dale Vande said at that time what should have been a “minor traffic offense” was “escalated very quickly,” primarily by Player.

Charges against Player’s former co-defendant, Carlos Taylor, for his claimed actions during the incident were dismissed earlier this year by Judge Steven Bieda of 37th District Court following a preliminary examination in his court. Taylor was to return to the police force.

Player also faces charges in Highland Park for his alleged actions when he was a police officer there. He is charged with misconduct in office, assault with the intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and felonious assault. Player allegedly used his Taser twice on a man outside of a Burger King in May 2020 and pushed him to the ground, causing him to strike his head on a cement wall, according to Wayne County prosecutors.

After his case was bound over from 30th District Court in Highland Park, he was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday by Judge Prentiss Edwards Jr. in in Wayne County Circuit Court in Detroit, court records say.

He has been free on a personal bond.
