The Raiders not only extended the contract of star defensive end Maxx Crosby, they made him the highest-paid non quarterback in NFL history.
Crosby received a three-year extension worth $106.5 million, with $91.5 million guaranteed, to keep him in Las Vegas through the 2029 season, a person with knowledge of the contract said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the financial details were not announced.
His average salary of $35.5 million in the three-year extension surpasses Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson’s average deal of $35 million, according to overthe cap.com.
That was the previous high for a non QB.
Crosby, however, was asked about receiving the richest contract outside of quarterbacks at Wednesday’s news conference. He downplayed the significance of it, saying his focus was on helping the team succeed on the field.
“I’ve said it a million times, I feel like I was meant to be a Raider,” Crosby said. “I love being here. I love the people. You look at all the legends that created what this brand is, and that’s winning. Ted Hendricks, Marcus Allen, Charles Woodson, the guys like that that I look up to. That’s what I want to solidify, and those guys are all about winning.”
Crosby has been one of the NFL’s elite pass rushers with 59 1/2 sacks since being selected in the fourth round of the 2019 draft. He is on the verge of becoming just the third Raiders player since at least 1982 to reach 60 sacks.
Eagles retain All-Pro lineacker Baum
All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun is staying with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Super Bowl champions announced Wednesday they’ve agreed on a three-year deal with Baun through the 2027 season. Baun’s contract is worth $51 million, including $34 million guaranteed.
Baun, who mostly played on special teams for the New Orleans Saints, was a key part of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s unit last season in his first year in Philadelphia.
He had 151 tackles, 3 1/2 sacks and one interception in the regular season and also had a pick against Patrick Mahomes in the Eagles’ 40-22 victory in the Super Bowl last month.
Baun finished fifth in voting for the AP Defensive Player of the Year award, earning two first-place votes.
He would’ve been a free agent next week but passed up an opportunity to test the open market to remain in Philadelphia.
Chiefs trade guard Thuney to Bears
The Kansas City Chiefs are trading two-time All-Pro guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears for a fourth-round pick in the 2026 draft.
The 32-year-old Thuney would have carried a salary cap number of nearly $27 million next season, unless the Chiefs could have worked out a contract extension. That extension is now expected to come from the Bears, who have been working to retool their offensive line to better protect young quarterback Caleb Williams next season.
On Tuesday, the Bears agreed to send a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams for Jonah Jackson, a former Pro Bowl offensive guard. Jackson was drafted by the Detroit Lions, where he had played for new Chicago coach Ben Johnson.
Williams was sacked an NFL-high 68 times last season.
Wide receivers Kirk, Lockett released
The Jacksonville Jaguars are releasing receiver Christian Kirk after two injury-filled seasons.
Parting with Kirk will save the Jaguars $10.4 million against the salary cap in 2025. It will cost the team $13.6 million in dead money, though.
Kirk signed a four-year, $72 million deal in free agency in 2022. He delivered 84 catches for 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns — all career highs — that season. But he’s missed 14 games since.
• The Seattle Seahawks released Tyler Lockett on Wednesday, parting ways with the franchise’s second all-time leading receiver in a cost-cutting move ahead of the new league year.
Lockett, a 10-year veteran, caught 661 passes for 8,564 yards and 61 touchdowns in Seattle, trailing only Hall of Famer Steve Largent in all three categories on the team’s career list.
Yet Lockett’s production dipped in each of the past two seasons.
He finished with just 894 yards receiving in 2023, a number that fell to just 600 in 2024, his lowest mark since 2017.
Lockett’s salary cap number was scheduled to balloon to more than $30 million in 2025. Cutting him frees up about $17 million in cap space.
Seahawks’ Metcalf requests trade
D.K. Metcalf wants out of Seattle.
A person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that the longtime Seahawks wide receiver has asked for a trade.
Metcalf, a two-time Pro Bowler, has caught 438 passes for 6,324 yards and 48 touchdowns in six seasons with the Seahawks.
The 27-year-old Metcalf has one year remaining on his current contract, which has three voidable seasons after 2025. He’s currently scheduled to count nearly $32 million against the salary cap next year.
