Concord has a new dessert shop serving up a hearty scoop of nostalgia alongside ice cream, sodas, pies and cookies.

The shop was co-founded by Michele Iseri and Amparo Sevilla-Merryfield, two longtime Concord residents who met years ago in corporate jobs at Verizon Wireless. Between them, they also raised six active kids in town — Iseri has two and Sevilla-Merryfield has four — and they’d longed for a community-focused shop for families.

They’ve made that goal into a reality, complete with old-school flourishes like checkered tiles, Shirley Temple sodas and sundaes served in tall glasses.

The duo signed their lease last October and began remodeling. Their corporate backgrounds proved helpful, as they pivoted into entrepreneurship, Iseri says. “I think it provided us a sense that we could do this. It’s just doing it on a much smaller scale and doing it all yourself.”

The grand opening was in July,

“When people walk in the door, they’ll say, ‘Oh my goodness, this reminds me of an old-fashioned ice cream parlor when I was a kid.’ That was exactly the emotional reaction I was working toward,” Iseri says.

The shop specializes in small pies in the 3- to 5-inch range. “There’s nobody in town that just bakes pies anymore,” she says.

They also make six different types of cookies, plus pastries, such as muffins and cinnamon rolls. And they’re one of the only East Bay purveyors of San Francisco-based Mitchell’s Ice Cream, so you’ll find ice cream-based desserts and sundaes, including a caramel apple pie sundae made with the bakery’s mini apple pies.

Are you among those who have been clamoring for a Campbell location of The Good Salad?

Founder-owner Sanad Al Souz heard — and acted. An engineer who worked with a chef to help create a menu of meal-size salads that feature regional produce, dressings made inhouse and 41 customizable ingredients, he will soon open the doors of his downtown Campbell space.

The top seller is the Blazing Bird, made with halal Cajun chicken breast, romaine lettuce, black bean and corn pico de gallo, avocado and crispy fried onions, with Chipotle Ranch Dressing and a signature — and addictive — pomegranate balsamic glaze on the side. The Samurai Steak is also popular.

The mix-and-match ingredients list features 15 vegetable and fruit options (including medjool dates, diced beets and house-pickled red onion and jalapenos) along with crunchy toppings, legumes, cheese and spices. Add or subtract toppings as you like. Part of the appeal of The Good Salad is the pricing stricture, allowing customers to delete a topping and receive a commensurate reduction in price.

New on the menu is focaccia, which Al Souz says is baked inhouse daily.

The Good Salad is located in the former Brown Chicken Brown Cow space. That popular burger spot shuttered after the owner moved out of the Bay Area.

Restaurant Week has deals at San Ramon’s Bishop Ranch

There’s no better time than a “Restaurant Week” to check out local favorites — and San Ramon’s City Center Bishop Ranch is hosting one this month, with a variety of food and beverage specials from now through Sept. 22.

Among those offering deals at the shopping center are Bamboo Sushi, C Casa, Delarosa, Dumpling Time, Fieldwork Brewing, LB Steak, Marugame Udon, Social Affair and World Wrapps.

At Bamboo Sushi, for example, a $45 special will get you king salmon sashimi, sesame green beans, spicy tuna crispy rice, their popular Green Machine roll and miso-glazed black cod. Top it off with a black sesame brownie with fresh berries and vanilla ice cream. For an extra $15, you can add sake pairings.

If European wines are your thing, Delarosa is offering happy hour prices all week long, with $5 glasses of Franconia Viola and Sarti Barbera, or a $6 glass of Gavioli Lambrusco.

With Social Affair’s $35 special, you’ll get sautéed dandelion lamb meatballs with honey chili glazed bacon, za’atar flatbreads and a spicy “Hot Lips” tequila and mezcal cocktail.

The week will conclude with “September Sips,” a pair of afternoon wine tastings where wineries pour their best selections while you sip and shop from 1-5:30 p.m.

Starbird chicken opens a location in Palo Alto

A decade after launching on El Camino Real in Sunnyvale, the Starbird group of fast-casual chicken restaurants has opened its first Palo Alto location — also on El Camino Real.

Starbird’s concept was developed by the innovators at Culinary Edge, who started experimenting with chicken after deciding there were too many burger players in the marketplace. The result was a fresh bird that’s marinated in a signature brine before being fried in rice bran oil to give it a lighter taste and better crunch.

The signature Starbird 2.0 sandwich is topped with rainbow slaw and avocado. Other sandwiches include the Seoul Star, with a Korean sauce, sweet soy glaze and veggies, and the Nashville HotBird, with a Greek yogurt ranch dressing and dill pickles.

The full lineup features half a dozen salads — including an Elote Chop Salad, Miso Caesar, Green Goddess Cobb — and chicken tenders and nuggets, all served with housemade sauces and dressings.

Details >> Open daily from 10:30 a.m. 10 p.m. Monday-Saturday, until 9 p.m. Sunday. 2515 El Camino Real, Palo Alto; www.starbirdchicken.com
