Concert promoting giant Live Nation will run a new 19,000-capacity outdoor amphitheater in Shakopee that’s due to open late next summer.
“This partnership is an incredible opportunity to create a venue that meets the needs of artists and fans,” said Ned Abdul, president and CEO of Swervo Development Corp., the company developing the property. “We’re committed to build spaces that support the community and energize the economy, while providing entertainment, and are excited to bring this vision alive for Shakopee and the Twin Cities region.”
Work on the 37-acre site began in July 2023. It will serve as an anchor tenant of Canterbury Commons, a $400 million entertainment district in development near Canterbury Park. The district is also expected to include apartments, a brewery, restaurants and an office building.
The yet-to-be-named amphitheater will host more than 30 concerts each summer and create 700 permanent jobs, according to Swervo. It will feature 360-degree views of the Minnesota River Valley and include a covered lower bowl, a sloped lawn with space for 5,000 people, two elevated beer gardens and VIP skyboxes.
Live Nation owns or operates the Fillmore Minneapolis and Varsity Theater in Minneapolis as well as Somerset (Wis.) Amphitheater. Swervo owns the Armory and Uptown Theater in Minneapolis, both of which are run by Live Nation.
In May, the Justice Department sued Live Nation and its subsidiary Ticketmaster, accusing them of running an illegal monopoly over live events in America and asking a court to break up a system that squelches competition and drives up prices for fans. At the time, the company said it would defend itself against the “baseless allegations.”
