Ksenia Karelina, a Russian-American woman freed by Moscow in a prisoner swap, was welcomed home by her fiancé, professional boxer Chris van Heerden, late Thursday night at Joint Base Andrews, Md. Karelina was arrested in the Ural Mountain city of Yekaterinburg in February 2024 and convicted of treason on charges stemming from a donation of about $52 to a charity aiding Ukraine. U.S. authorities have called the case “absolutely ludicrous.” She was released Thursday in exchange for a Russian-German man who had been jailed in the United States on smuggling charges.
