Dodgers: Dave Roberts played with Barry Bonds, watching the seven-time National League MVP at the height of his powers. The Dodgers’ manager has seen only one player who compares to Bonds: Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani added to his growing legend Friday night, blasting a three-run homer to cap a six-run ninth inning in the Dodgers’ improbable 14-11 comeback victory over the Diamondbacks. “Between him and Barry Bonds, those are the two best players I’ve ever seen,” Roberts said. “I played with Barry, but what Sho does in the clutch, I’ve never seen anything like what he does in the clutch.” The Dodgers and Diamondbacks played one of the wildest games of the season in the desert, combining for 25 runs, 26 hits, two blown leads of at least three runs and six homers. It all came down to Ohtani. The Japanese star has shown a knack for coming through in big moments during his eight-year career, first with the Angels, the past two seasons with the crosstown Dodgers. Ohtani came to the plate in the ninth after the Dodgers rallied with three runs to tie it at 11. Ryan Thompson entered the game to face Ohtani with runners on first and second. Thompson got ahead of Ohtani 1-2, but left a breaking ball on the inside corner. Ohtani turned on it quickly and sent it deep into the seats in right for his 12th of the season. He tossed his bat and raised his arms in celebration in a similar fashion to what Arizona’s Lourdes Gurriel Jr. did after a tying grand slam in the fifth.
Yankees: Ever since Jasson Dominguez made his debut in the majors as a prized 20-year-old prospect, the Yankees have been expecting big things. Dominguez delivered in a big way on Friday night, becoming the youngest player in the rich history of the Yankees franchise to hit three home runs in a single game. “Tonight was special,” Dominguez said. “When I hit the third one, I was telling myself ‘No way. There’s no way.’ ” Dominguez did it, capping the memorable night with a grand slam in the eighth inning of a 10-2 win to supplant Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio in the Yankees’ record book. At 22 years, 91 days old, Dominguez is the youngest player in Yankees history with a three-homer game, beating DiMaggio’s mark set in 1937 against the St. Louis Browns by 109 days. “That was incredible,” said teammate Aaron Judge, one of three other Yankees in history with a grand slam during a three-homer game.
Padres: Gavin Sheets had two doubles and four RBIs, Luis Arraez, Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill each had three hits in a 13-9 win over the Rockies on Friday night.
Blue Jays: Addison Barger doubled three times and drove in two runs in a 6-3 victory over the Mariners on Friday night. Barger gave the Blue Jays an early advantage with a two-run double in the first inning.
