Reliever Tanner Scott’s $72 million, four-year contract was finalized Thursday by the Los Angeles Dodgers, raising the World Series champions’ offseason spending to $452 million on eight players.

The left-hander was a first-time All-Star last year, going 9-6 with a 1.75 ERA and 22 saves in 24 chances for Miami and San Diego, which acquired Scott on July 30. He struck out 84 and walked 36 in 72 innings.

The 30-year-old is 31-24 with a 3.56 ERA and 55 saves for Baltimore (2017-21), Miami (2022-24) and San Diego.

After winning their second title in five years, the Dodgers kept utilityman Tommy Edman with a $74 million, five-year contract, outfielder Teoscar Hernández with a $66 million three-year deal and right-hander Blake Treinen for $22 million over two years.

Los Angeles has added Scott, left-hander Blake Snell ($182 million for five years), outfielder Michael Conforto ($17 million for one season) and second baseman Hyeseong Kim ($12.5 million for three years), and also agreed to a minor league contract with right-hander Roki Sasaki for a $6.5 million signing bonus.

Aberg, Griffin share lead at Farmers >> Ludvig Aberg and Lanto Griffin shared the lead at Torrey Pines in the Farmers Insurance Open after ferocious wind forced an 86-minute delay and prevented dozens of players from finishing the second round.

First-round leader Aberg fought to a 3-over 75, while Griffin had a 72 — both on the South Course — to sit even with Aberg at 6-under 138.

Danny Walker was 5 under, while Chris Gotterup had a 69 to match the day’s best round and join Hayden Springer and Sungjae Im at 4 under.

Keys upsets No. 2 Swiatek to reach first Australian final >> Madison Keys saved a match point and came back to upset No. 2 Iga Swiatek 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) in a high-intensity, high-quality Australian Open semifinal on Thursday night to reach a Grand Slam title match for the second time in her career.

Keys is a 29-year-old American who was the runner-up at the 2017 U.S. Open. She claimed more games against Swiatek than the five-time major champion had dropped in her five previous matches at Melbourne Park combined over the past two weeks.

But Keys was on the brink of defeat when Swiatek served for the match at 6-5 in the third set and was a point away from ending it at 40-30. Swiatek put a backhand into the net there, and eventually got broken by double-faulting, sending the match to a concluding first-to-10, win-by-two tiebreaker.

The 19th-seeded Keys will face No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in Saturday’s final. Sabalenka beat good friend Paula Badosa 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals.

McVay wants to know QB Stafford’s status soon >> Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay says he would like to know “sooner than later” about Matthew Stafford’s status for next season.

McVay provided no updates on his veteran quarterback’s plans for the coming year when the coach held his end-of-season news conference Thursday, but McVay sounded eager to confirm whether or not Stafford will be returning to the Rams for a 17th season. Los Angeles spent much of the past offseason working on changes requested by Stafford to his contract, only completing the deal on reporting day for training camp.

“We don’t want to have that go on again,” McVay said.

College football

Belichick and North Carolina have a signed contract >> North Carolina football coach Bill Belichick and school officials have signed his official employment contract, formalizing last month’s hiring after speculation that the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach might opt instead for a return to the NFL.

The formal contract replaces the signed term sheet released as the school held its introductory news conference for the 72-year-old Belichick, who is taking over a college program for the first time.

The sides agreed to a five-year deal, though only the first three years are guaranteed with $10 million per year in base and supplemental salary with another $3.5 million available in bonuses. There was also a $10 million buyout for Belichick to leave until June, when it drops to $1 million.

Motor sports

F1 drivers could be suspended for swearing or political statements >> Formula 1 drivers could be suspended from racing or lose championship points for swearing or making political statements under new rules from series governing body the FIA.

That could deepen a rift with the drivers, who criticized the FIA last year after Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc were punished for swearing in FIA news conferences.

The FIA is seeking “to further enhance transparency and consistency in decision-making,” the organization said in an emailed statement on Thursday.

Skiing

Shiffrin healed from puncture wound >> Mikaela Shiffrin has recovered from her ski crash two months ago and told The Associated Press she plans to return to racing next Thursday at a World Cup slalom in Courchevel, France.

Shiffrin’s been out since her serious fall in a giant slalom race on Nov. 30 in Killington, Vermont, where something punctured her in the side and caused severe trauma to her oblique muscles.

The 29-year-old Shiffrin remains focused only on progression, not so much her pursuit of World Cup win No. 100. Her plan includes racing the slalom and giant slalom at the world championships next month in Austria.
