Monee police found two people shot, one fatally, inside a vehicle Tuesday after responding to a shots fired call, officials said.

Officers arrived in the 25700 block of Sunrise Drive shortly before 3 p.m. after receiving a description of a masked male armed with a firearm who had fled in a vehicle with three others and found the two gunshot victims seated in another vehicle, police said in a statement.

Christopher Mitchell, 25, of Chicago, was found dead in the driver’s seat and a 23-year-old woman was found in the passenger’s seat. The woman, also of Chicago, was taken to University of Chicago Medicine with serious injuries, police said.

It’s believed the two victims were followed from Chicago to Monee, where they were visiting a friend, and attacked once they arrived, Chief Scott Koerner said. He said the victims were not family members and that police were continuing to investigate their relationship. Mitchell is a former Matteson resident.

Police have not made any arrests, but are following several leads and coordinating with other agencies that may have had contact with the victims, the department said.
