As a young professional, growing your business can be challenging, especially if you’re new to a community. Even if you’re on a team, developing your own book of business can make the difference between a successful career or a revolving door of missed opportunities. But where do you start? Who do you talk to? What resources are available? And as a business leader or mentor, how can you enable your team to discover new opportunities for growth?
Joining the Greater Eureka Chamber of Commerce can be a pivotal step. Whether you’re seeking to expand your network, gain insights from established professionals, or access resources to elevate your business, the Chamber provides invaluable opportunities. As a new professional, attending a monthly mixer is a perfect first step to meet like-minded individuals and discover collaborative possibilities. Members can take advantage of classes and workshops, attend relevant summits and seminars, access the directory of members, promote their campaigns in the newsletter and, of course, network!
I remember being nervous when invited to my first Chamber mixer by a respected colleague and mentor but thrilled at the opportunity to meet the business owners and professionals that were investing their time and making an impact in the local community. My mentor introduced me to a few of her friends and clients and I spent 1.5 hours enjoying hor d’oeuvres, chatting with interesting people, and learning about the different promotions, projects and events happening in the business community.I soon began to volunteer on the Chamber’s ambassador committee. Between 2011-19, I attended all the mixers and ribbon cuttings I could fit into my schedule. It was a joy to celebrate a business’ new beginnings and I appreciated being one of the first to know when a company was coming to town. I built friendships, developed my skills and grew my network even as I transitioned from banking into real estate. As a young professional, I couldn’t have asked for a better circle to immerse myself in. I’m forever grateful to my mentor for inviting me to that first mixer.
Our Chamber of Commerce has played a key role in my development as a local professional and helped me to connect with others across all industries who’ve paralleled growth in their respective careers. There is a direct correlation between my involvement and the path my career has taken.
Our coast redwoods grow taller and more resilient when their roots intertwine and fuse with the roots of redwoods around them. This ecosystem enables the community of trees to grow stronger together, sharing resources, information and infrastructure across acres and acres. Likewise, our community grows stronger when our businesses and industries connect and collaborate. The Chamber of Commerce facilitates those connections.
I have recently had the privilege of joining the Greater Eureka Chamber of Commerce as a Director of the Board and am proud to advocate for all the resources, classes, committees, conference space, etc. our Chamber has made available to support our business community in their success.
