James Carl Campbell. "Jim", loving husband of 65 years, caring father of four, successful business man and special friend. None of these say enough of the whole man who passed away from cancer on November 18th, at 89 surrounded by his wife, Janice, and their children, Cathy Campbell Hurtle, Linda Campbell, Tracey Campbell Williams and Mitchell Campbell.
Jim grew up in Evanston, Illinois. He attended the University of Colorado where he joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity, was their president and was elected president of his Senior Class at CU.
Jim's first job was with IBM as a Sales Manager and headed up the first World Trade Class in London, England. After 12 successful years with IBM, Jim got an "itch" to try his hand as an entrepreneur and started LIFECARE, in Boulder, Colorado with one employee, himself.
Jim continued to build LIFECARE into a pulmonary/respiratory company with 325 employees over the next 25 years. LIFECARE manufactured the first respirator for home use giving hundreds of ventilator-dependent persons the opportunity to live their lives outside their home. In 1994, LIFECARE was named Exporter of the Year by the governor of Colorado. The company had grown to offices in 18 US cities and two international offices in Munich, Germany and Hong Kong, China. A few years later in 1996, the company was sold to the large Dutch company Phillips.
In retirement Jim ser ved on the boards of Wells Fargo Bank and the University of Colorado Foundation. In 1990 he was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst and Young and then became a member of the University of Colorado Hospital Endowment Board.
Jim will be remembered for his love of family, love of Colorado and his generosity to the University of Colorado, the Denver Foundation, and many other Denver nonprofits.
There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, January 6 at 11 am, at the Mile High Church, 9077 W. Alameda Avenue, Lakewood, Colorado, open to all family and friends. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to your favorite charity in Jim's name.
