Panama stuns U.S. 1-0, eliminating Americans from CONCACAF Nations

INGLEWOOD, Calif.>> Cecilio Waterman scored a stunning goal in the fourth minute of second-half injury time, and Panama beat the three-time defending champion United States 1-0 on Thursday to reach the CONCACAF Nations League final.

Waterman took a pass down the right side from Adalberto Carrasquilla in front of a packed-in U.S. defense and fired a perfect right-footed diagonal shot past Matt Turner into the far left corner. Waterman’s 11th international goal, on Panama’s only shot on target on the night, advanced the Panamanians to a final Sunday against Mexico or Canada.

Ex-NFL, Michigan coach charged with hacking for athletes’ intimate photos

DETROIT >> Former NFL and University of Michigan assistant football coach Matt Weiss hacked into the computer accounts of thousands of college athletes seeking intimate photos and videos, according to an indictment filed Thursday.

Weiss, who worked for the Baltimore Ravens before joining Michigan’s staff in 2021, was charged with 14 counts of unauthorized computer access and 10 counts of identity theft.

The indictment was filed in federal court in Detroit.

Weiss was fired in 2023 as Michigan’s co-offensive coordinator after failing to cooperate with the school’s investigation of his access to computers.

Cal hires former NFL head coach Ron Rivera to be GM of football program

BERKELEY, Calif.>> Ron Rivera spent more than three decades in the NFL and had opportunities to return to the sideline as an assistant when a more intriguing option came his way.

Rather than mentor a first-time NFL coach, Rivera leaped at the chance to return to his alma mater to help revive the football program at California. Rivera was officially hired as the first general manager for the Cal football team on Thursday after the move was officially approved by the UC Regents.

Georgia suspends Tuggle, Easley following Tuggle’s arrest for reckless driving

ATHENS, Ga. >> Georgia sophomore wide receiver Nitro Tuggle and freshman offensive lineman Marques Easley were suspended indefinitely from all team activities on Thursday after Tuggle’s arrest for speeding and reckless driving.

Tuggle was released after posting bond.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported Easley was involved in a vehicle crash on Monday night.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart has said he has struggled to find ways to convince his players to avoid speeding and reckless driving.

A crash killed a player and a recruiting staffer in January 2023, shortly after the team celebrated its second straight national championship.

Former Cy Young Award winner Peavy returns to Padres as special assistant

SAN DIEGO>> Jake Peavy, the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner and member of the San Diego Padres Hall of Fame, has joined the team as special assistant to CEO Erik Greupner.

Greupner said Thursday the three-time All-Star will assist multiple departments and serve as a team ambassador.

“I’m incredibly appreciative of this opportunity to reunite with my Padres family,” Peavy said in a statement.
