Seven people are missing after a massive explosion Tuesday at a fireworks storage warehouse in Esparto led to a series of fires and smaller blasts.
“This remains an active incident with a continued threat to the immediate area that remains under an evacuation order,” a joint press release from the Esparto Fire Protection District, CAL FIRE, and Yolo County Office of Emergency Services read. “There is a reduced risk today (Wednesday), but a risk that still remains, and thus the evacuation orders are in place. Site assessment is ongoing to assess the hazards. It is the goal to get residents back to their homes and possibly reduce the footprint of that evacuation zone.”
According to the release, seven individuals remain unaccounted for. First responders and investigators are working diligently with the property owner to locate the individuals.
“As part of our investigation, we will be working to determine that everything happening at the facility was within our license requirements,” the release continued. “This type of incident is very rare, as facilities like this are required to not only follow our stringent California pyrotechnic requirements, but also federal explosive storage requirements.”
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s press office said, “The State Fire Marshal has sent an arson and bomb investigation team, and stands ready to provide additional support as needed” in a post on X (formerly Twitter) late Tuesday.
Reports in Woodland, approximately 14 miles away from Madison and Esparto, indicated that a loud “boom” could be heard throughout the entire city, while other confirmed reports stated that the blast was felt as far south as Vacaville. The first reports about the explosion were posted on social media sites Tuesday around 5:52 p.m.
According to a KCRA 3 news report, spot fires and non-stop smaller explosions, which appeared to be fireworks, continued throughout the night as emergency crews waited out the situation while keeping people out of the area.
According to PG&E, upwards of 2,000 Esparto residents were without power for most of the night. As of 10 a.m., Wednesday, that number was approximately in the 50-500 range.
During its live broadcast of the incident, KRCA 3 reported that a business named Devastating Pyrotechnics, with headquarters in San Francisco and Esparto, is in the area of the explosion. A news release from Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway — which canceled its planned July 4 fireworks show following the explosion — named Devastating Pyrotechnics as the company, noting “our partner, Devastating Pyrotechnics, takes pride in giving the Chico area the best fireworks show. We want to send them our heartfelt, sincere wishes as they deal with this destructive disaster.”
“The fire will take time to cool, and once it does, explosive experts must safely enter the site to assess and secure the area,” a statement from the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office read. “We strongly urge everyone to continue avoiding the area for the next several days so that fire crews, law enforcement, and emergency personnel can do their jobs safely and effectively.
“The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
According to the California Highway Patrol, as of 3 p.m. Wednesday, the current roads closed include:
• CR-86A at CR-25
• CR-86A at State Route Highway 16
• County Road 23 at County Road 87B
• County Road 86 at County Road 2
According to the joint press release, the Yolo County Public Library in Esparto has been identified as an evacuation center and a cooling zone, as evacuation orders were still in effect for the following zones as of 3 p.m. Wednesday:
• MAD063-A
• MAD149-B
According to the city of Woodland, the July 3 fireworks show at Woodland High School is still scheduled to go as planned.
However, in San Jose, KRON news reported that the city of San Jose has canceled its fireworks show at Lake Cunningham after fireworks for the show were destroyed in the blaze. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said the city is looking for a replacement or alternative to the planned fireworks show.
Updates will be made available as more news becomes available.
