Law enforcement officials on Monday confirmed that Boulder police shot and killed a woman Sunday afternoon near the North Boulder Recreation Center when she produced what appeared to be a firearm.
At a news conference at the Boulder Police Department, Support Services Deputy Chief Ron Gosage said two officers were involved in the shooting near the center at 3170 Broadway. Gosage said the woman was the only suspect.
At 4:10 p.m. Sunday, police received a 911 call from a driver who said they were approached by a woman who had a gun in the driveway exit of the recreation center. At 4:12 p.m., police arrived on scene and located a woman two minutes later near the center. Gosage said the woman did not cooperate with police and fled north on Broadway on foot.
Gosage said the woman was seen removing what appeared to be a firearm from her purse and that police used forms of less lethal force against her, to no avail. He said that after several de-escalation attempts, police shot the woman at 4:26 p.m. Police immediately started administering medical care to the woman before a Boulder Fire-Rescue crew arrived, Gosage said, but after approximately 40 minutes of emergency aid, she died.Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said during the news conference he saw the replica Beretta gun while on scene at 1 a.m. Monday. He said that the replica looks identical to a real gun but “does not act as an actual firearm.”
Gosage said Monday afternoon that the woman was confirmed to be the subject of a trespassing call at the recreation center that police responded to earlier Sunday in which she was reportedly refusing to leave a bathroom. Gosage said the woman did not present a firearm during the trespass call.
Police are asking that anyone with information about the event to contact Detective Scott Byars at ByarsS@bouldercolorado.gov or 303-441-1970 and reference case no. 23-12689. Anyone with videos or photos are encouraged by police to upload them to https://bouldercopd.evidence.com/axon/community-request/public/2312689.
The investigation into the incident by the Boulder County Investigation Team remains ongoing.
Due to the ongoing investigation, police could not say where on her body the woman was shot, how many times, or what less lethal forces were used. The two officers involved in the shooting are currently on administrative leave, according to Gosage.
“This is an absolute tragedy,” Dougherty said during the press conference. “I can promise the investigation will be thorough.”
“Thankfully, no officers or other community members were injured during this incident,” Gosage said during the conference and in an emailed release. “The use of deadly force is something no officer ever wants to do. The taking of a life is the most serious action an officer can take, and our thoughts are with this woman’s friends and family.”
Gosage thanked the public for their patience as the investigation remains ongoing.
The woman’s identity will be released by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office.
