SANTA CRUZ >> Aptos High seniors Logan Brantley and Casey MacConnell each won two individual events, and the Mariners’ boys track and field team won eight total at the Santa Cruz County Meet of Champions II at Harbor High on Saturday.

Santa Cruz star Eli Fitchen-Young, a Duke University committed senior, turned in an exceptional, record-breaking run, as athletes from 15 high schools battled for local bragging rights.

Fitchen-Young took first in the 800-meter race in 1 minute, 53.58 seconds, which was a personal record, broke a 34-year-old school record, and was the fastest time run by a Central Coast Section athlete this season.

The Cardinals’ previous record holder, Victor Lang, ran a 1:55.0 as a senior in 1991 at the Region IV meet.

(Fitchen-Young also holds the fastest time in the section this season in the 1,600, 4:15.21.)

Brantley took first in the shot put (54 feet, 10.5 inches) and discus (157-4), and MacConnell took first in the 100 (11.47) and high jump (6-0) with PRs in both.The Mariners also shined in the distance runs and relay events. Sophomore Sam Hansen took first in the 1,600 (4:30.68) and senior teammate Vincent Sandford-Carroll took first in the 3,200 (10:21.73).

Aptos’ Damian Suchil, MacConnell, Deric Moren, and Scott Catesi teamed up to win the 4×100 relay (43.91) and Anthony Sandford-Carroll, Andrew Pursley, Hansen, and Brady Bliesner teamed up for the win in the 4×800 relay (8:46.71).

Fitchen-Young teamed with Dylan Hermanson, Caelan Harris, and Kai Rodgers to win the 4×400 relay (3:38.71).

The hurdle events were won by two freshmen. Scotts Valley’s Aaron Wheeler took first in the 110 hurdles (18.42) and Watsonville’s Noel Navarro PR’d in his 300 hurdles win (43.69).

Monte Vista Christian senior Joshua Tepoorten took first in the 400 (51.43).

Two other athletes had notable runner-up finishes. MVC junior Conor Gilliam took second in the 800 (1:58.72) and became the second runner in school history to break 2 minutes, and Watsonville junior Lisandro Pantoja took second in the discus with a throw of 149-6, the second-best mark in school history.

Athletes from four other schools also earned wins. Harbor senior Luke Wyland took first in the 200 (22.97), Pacific Collegiate sophomore Jude Holmlund PR’d in the pole vault (10-6), Pajaro Valley senior Izaak Ocampo took first in the long jump (21-4), and St. Francis junior Coy Jordan PR’d in the triple jump (40-0).

Girls

Aptos junior Ella Boyes and Santa Cruz sophomore Joy Roberts secured wins in multiple events at Santa Cruz County Meet of Champions II on Saturday.

Boyes took first in the 100 hurdles (16.28), 300 hurdles (47.16) and long jump (17-3), recording PRs in each. Roberts took first in the 100 (12.97) and PR’d in the 200 (26.04) for the win.

Aptos sophomore Bella Hartnett took first in the 400 (59.64) with a PR, and was part of two relay wins.

Boyes and Hartnett teamed with Siena Black and Izzy Graff for first in the 4×100 relay (49.92). Hartnett, Siena Black, Natasha Newcombe, and Teagan Chevalier took first in the 4×400 relay (4:21.71).

Scotts Valley junior Ava Decleve took first in the 800 (2:20.53).

Santa Cruz senior Heidi Green took first in the 1,600 (5:17.62). MVC senior Kylie Brunelli took second in a school-record 5:19.66.

Brunelli took first in the 3,200 (11:37.61) with a PR, good for the second-fastest time in school history.

Watsonville’s Lizbeth Gomez Abrica, Azucena Sandoval, Katelynn Ruiz, and Aileen Reyes teamed for first in the 4×800 relay (10:38.69)

St. Francis junior Camila Suarez took first in the shot put (27-7) with a PR, and Mount Madonna senior Lagi Hunnicutt took first in the triple jump with a PR (32-9.5).

Soquel junior Summer Shields took first in the discus (82-7) and SLV senior Orea Pollock took first in the high jump (5-0).

Pajaro Valley senior Ellie Moore took first in the pole vault (7-6) though runner-up Jayleen Arredondo, a senior at Watsonville, cleared the same height.
