Logan Hawk has a single-minded focus when he steps on the wrestling mat and it’s rubbing off on his Lake Shore teammates.
Hawk was one of four Shorians to win both of their matches Wednesday as Lake Shore went 2-0 in a Macomb Area Conference Blue Division double-dual meet at Roseville.
“When I go out there, I bow my head and it doesn’t matter about the last match, it doesn’t matter about the next match,” he said. “The match right now is all that matters. That’s what I’m focused on.”
He kept his focus through a bloody nose that stopped his 144-pound match against James Onyski of Marysville for several minutes. Once the bleeding stopped, Hawk went on to win 7-4 and kept the Shorians rolling to a 57-18 victory against the Vikings, who came into the meet undefeated in the MAC Blue.
“I turn off all my senses,” Hawk said. “It doesn’t matter what’s going on — just wrestle. I fixate on the match. I’ll worry about the bloody nose later.”
Hawk moved up to 150 pounds for the match with Roseville and he won on a pin in 1:20 to help the Shorians to a 42-29 victory.
“He’s a fighter,” said coach Steve Hendershot. “He’s 100 percent focused. He has goals and he’s focused on the team.”
The two wins Improved the Shorians’ division record to 4-0 and assured them of at least a share of the dual meet championship. It’s the first championship for Lake Shore since the 2021-22 team won the MAC Gold with a 6-0 record. The Shorians close out the league dual-meet season at home against L’Anse Creuse on Jan. 23.
Hendershot said that it’s the Shorians “team-first attitude” that triggered the turnaround from last season’s 1-4 finish in the MAC Blue.
“They want to win as a team more than they want to win individually,” Hendershot said. “They’ve bought into that. They’re pushing each other. They’re not giving up any bonus points. They’re fighting every minute they’re out there.”
There’s no letdown in intensity when one of the regulars is out.
“We weren’t 100 percent today,” Hendershot said. “We had a couple guys out so we put their backups in and they matched their intensity and effort.”
Hawk and the other veterans on the team have worked with the coaching staff to turn the Shorians into a championship team.
“We have a lot more drive and so much more potential this year,” Hawk said. “We’ve been working with them, giving them extra stuff and it’s starting to show. One day I hope we can all go to states and meet the dreams we have for our wrestlers.”
Ethan Garcia (132 pounds), Wyatt Smith (150 and 157) and Camden Thibeault (285) also won both of their matches.
“Those guys come to work all the time,” Hendershot said.
L’Anse Creuse and Marysville each went 1-1 in the double-dual. The Lancers defeated Roseville 46-33 but dropped a 42-32 decision to Marysville.
“We were happy with them today,” said L’Anse Creuse coach Ben Powers. “We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores so we have some gaps in the upper weights. We hope to fill those gaps next year.
“We have a couple freshmen in the varsity lineup and it’s all about learning for them.”
One of the highlights for the Lancers was freshman John Maly’s first varsity win — a first-period pin in the Roseville match.
“He’s a first-year wrestler and he was pretty happy,” Powers said.
