With his goal in Saturday’s 2-1 win against D.C. United, Galaxy midfielder Diego Fagúndez moved closer to the 80-goal, 80-assist group.
It’s a rare accomplishment, with only three players in MLS history – Landon Donovan, Jaime Moreno and Diego Valeri – reaching the milestone.
Fagúndez, who now has 77 goals to go along with 76 assists in his 12-year career, tried to downplay the significance.
“To be honest, it doesn’t mean much,” he said Saturday. “It’s just another number that I get closer to. At the end of the day, I just want to be one of those players that will be recognized for what I’ve accomplished. Maybe it doesn’t show as much when your numbers are not showing every game, you know? But the work rate and everything that I give, that’s what matters to me and winning games.
“Winning games is what people remember, not the achievements that personally you have.”
Fagúndez and the Galaxy (3-13-6, 15 points) have won consecutive games heading into tonight’s game against Austin FC. Dating to May 31, the Galaxy have gained at least a point in five of their past six games (3-1-2).

Los Angeles FC defender Aaron Long will miss the rest of the season after having surgery to repair a ruptured left Achilles.
The team — which said the surgery was successful — made the announcement on Tuesday, three days after Long was injured in the 76th minute of a 2-0 win over FC Dallas.
The 32-year-old Long is in his third season with LAFC and has started all 15 games this year, scoring one goal. He’s started 60 games over the past three seasons.
Long has also made 35 career appearances with the U.S. men’s national team, with three goals and two assists. He was part of the 2022 World Cup roster and last played for the national team in 2023 at the Gold Cup.
LAFC is currently in sixth place in the MLS Western Conference standings with a 9-5-5 record and plays at third-place Minnesota (11-4-7) tonight.

The two race teams suing NASCAR over antitrust allegations filed for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction to be recognized as chartered organizations for the remainder of 2025.
23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports are locked in a lengthy legal battle over the charter system, which is the equivalent of the franchise model in other sports. 23XI, owned by retired NBA great Michael Jordan and three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin, and Front Row, owned by entrepreneur Bob Jenkins, last September rejected NASCAR’s final proposal on extensions and instead filed an antitrust suit.
The case is winding its way through the court system but now with urgency: the teams were set to lose their charters Wednesday and in the latest filing, they allege NASCAR has indicated it will immediately begin the process of selling the six tags that guarantee entry into every race as well as monetary rewards and other benefits.

Philadelphia 76ers wing player Paul George had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Monday to treat an injury that occurred during a recent workout.
George’s rehabilitation program is set to begin and he will be re-evaluated prior to the start of training camp, the Sixers said.
This will be George’s 16th season since Indiana drafted him 10th overall in 2010 out of Fresno State.
George, who turned 35 on May 2, signed a $212 million, four-year contract in free agency last summer. But his first year in Philly was marred by knee and adductor injuries that resulted in one of the worst years of his NBA career
George, who prepped at Knight High in Palmdale, averaged 16.2 points in just 41 games, easily his lowest scoring average since he averaged 12.1 points in his second NBA season. The nine-time All-Star has averaged 20.6 points in 908 career games.

Top-ranked amateur Lottie Woad announced Tuesday she will turn professional, two days after nearly winning a major title.
The 21-year-old Englishwoman followed her victory by six shots at the Women’s Irish Open on the Ladies European Tour on July 6 by finishing in third place at the Evian Championship on Sunday.
She didn’t win any prize money at either tournament because she was amateur.
However, her good finish at the Evian secured enough points to seal LPGA Tour membership through its Elite Amateur Pathway. It means she is ditching her college career at Florida State University with one year left.
Belgian gymnast Nina Derwael, a former Olympic champion on the uneven bars, is retiring from the sport, her national federation said on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Derwael won the gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and has decided to call it quits after capturing two more titles at the European Championships in June.
British tennis player Tara Moore was banned for four years Tuesday after a court agreed with the International Tennis Integrity Agency that she should be suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs.
Moore tested positive for anabolic steroids boldenone and nandrolone in April 2022, but she was cleared in December 2023 after an independent tribunal determined that the result was caused by eating contaminated meat while she was competing in Colombia.
The ITIA appealed that ruling, focusing on the portion of the findings related to nandrolone, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled in the ITIA’s favor, saying the majority of its panel felt that Moore couldn’t prove the sample was consistent with the ingestion of contaminated meat.
Tuesday was the first rest day of the Tour de France. Ben Healy has the overall lead, 29 seconds ahead of three-time Tour champion Tadej Pogacar.
Healy is the fourth Irish rider to wear the yellow jersey. Remco Evenepoel is third, 1:29 behind, and two-time Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard is 1:46 behind in fourth.
