Dusty May and Michigan basketball are adding another big man from the transfer portal from the Big Ten.
One week after receiving a commitment from Illinois forward Morez Johnson Jr., the Wolverines landed a pledge from UCLA’s Aday Mara. The 7-foot-3 center shared the news in an Instagram story on Friday.
As a sophomore this past season, Mara, who’s from Spain, averaged 6.4 points and four rebounds in a reserve role and shot 59% from the field in 33 games.
Despite averaging 13.1 minutes per contest and primarily coming off the bench, Mara ranked fourth in the Big Ten in total blocked shots (54). He had at least three blocks in eight games and blocked a career-high five shots in three contests, including UCLA’s NCAA Tournament first-round matchup against Utah State.
His best performance came in a home win over Wisconsin on Jan. 21, when he scored a career-best 22 points in 21 minutes and went 7-for-7 from the field. It marked the first time a Bruin shot 100% with at least seven field goal attempts in a game since 2014.
In his two seasons at UCLA, Mara appeared in 61 games and made nine starts. Before joining the Bruins, he had a stellar youth career overseas.

After reportedly entering his name into the transfer portal on April 1 — 10 days after UCLA’s season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament — the next stop of Mara’s career will bring him to Ann Arbor.
Mara’s addition will help May and Michigan bolster a revamped frontcourt and replace openings left behind by 7-footers Vlad Goldin and, possibly, Danny Wolf. Goldin has exhausted his eligibility, while Wolf could leave for the NBA Draft.
