Journalism launched a dramatic rally to win the $1 million Haskell Invitational on Saturday at Monmouth Park.

It was Journalism’s first race since the Triple Crown. He was the only colt to contest all three legs, winning the Preakness while finishing second to Sovereignty in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.

Heavily favored at 2-5 odds, Journalism broke poorly under jockey Umberto Rispoli and trailed the early leaders. He kicked into gear rounding the final turn to find Gosger and Goal Oriented locked in a dogfight for the lead. It appeared one of them would be the winner until Journalism roared down the center of the track to win by a half-length. Gosger held on for second, a neck ahead of Goal Oriented.

“You feel like you’re on a diesel,” Rispoli said. “He’s motoring and motoring. You never know when he’s going to take off. To do what he did today again, it’s unbelievable.”

The Haskell win was Journalism’s sixth in nine starts for trainer Michael McCarthy, and earned the colt a berth in the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar Nov. 1.

GOLF

Ryan Gerard holed a 20-foot flop shot for birdie on the last hole for a share of the lead with Rico Hoey in the Barracuda Championship in Truckee, the only PGA Tour event that uses the modified Stableford scoring system.

Players receive eight points for a double eagle, five for eagle and two for birdie. A point is deducted for bogey and three for double bogey.

In breezy conditions at Tahoe Mountain Club, Gerard had a 12-point round and Hoey birdied four of the last six in an eight-point day. Both winless on the PGA Tour, they had 34 points, one more than 2021 winner Erik van Rooyen.

Aphrodite Deng became the first Canadian winner in U.S. Girls’ Junior history, beating Xingtong Chen of Singapore 2 and 1 on Saturday in the 36-hole final at Atlanta Athletic Club.

Deng, 15, won her third juniors major title of the year, following the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley in April and the Mizuho Americas Open in May. She earned a spot in the 2026 U.S. Women’s Open at Riviera Country Club.

Deng had a 4-up lead over Chen, 16 — the first player from Singapore to reach the championship match — after 18 holes. Chen cut the deficit to two twice on the second 18, the last with a par win on the 34th. Deng ended it on the 35th by matching Chen’s par.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

JuJu Watkins, Kiki Rice, Flau’Jae Johnson and Azzi Fudd are three of 14 top women’s college basketball players whom Unrivaled is signing to NIL deals, the league announced.

It’s the second consecutive year that the 3-on-3 league that was founded by Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart has had name, image and likeness deals with college players. In it’s inaugural season, Unrivaled had deals with Paige Bueckers and Johnson.

Watkins, who plays for USC but is sidelined with an ACL injury, has also previously been involved with Unrivaled as an investor in its Series A funding round.

Johnson, who is at LSU, and Fudd, at UConn, were on hand for the announcement, as were Notre Dame’s Hannah Hidalgo and UConn’s Sarah Strong.

“Unrivaled is doing something amazing for women sports. It’s a big reason why we’re all here today,” Johnson said at Unrivaled’s pop-up headquarters in Indianapolis.

Other players signed include TCU’s Olivia Miles, and Lauren and Sienna Betts, Texas’ Madison Booker, Iowa State’s Audi Crooks, LSU’s MiLaysia Fulwiley, South Carolina Ta’Niya Latson and Michigan’s Syla Swords. The players range from sophomores to seniors.

Women’s basketball players have been able to take advantage of NIL opportunities over the last few years with Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Bueckers and Johnson at the forefront of it. Reese played in Unrivaled in its first season.

As part of the initiative, the class will be attending a multi-day event at the league’s headquarters in Miami, which will include skill development and content shoots.

Memphis guard Sincere Parker was arrested on an aggravated assault charge for an attack on his girlfriend, who told police that he choked her and hit her, according to court documents.

The woman told police that the attack occurred on May 27 at the Memphis apartment the couple shared. She reported that Parker pushed her, slapped her in the face and choked her, leaving her bruised and bloodied, according to a police report.

The woman also told police that Parker broke her cellphone because he didn’t want her to have the digital key to the apartment.

A warrant for Parker’s arrest was issued Friday and the 22-year-old was taken into custody Saturday. An arraignment was scheduled for Monday on charges of felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor vandalism.

TENNIS

Sixth-ranked Zheng Qinwen of China underwent arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow after experiencing “persistent pain” for several months.

The 22-year-old Olympic champion, who lost in the first round at Wimbledon to Katerina Siniakova, said the surgery was a success.

“Over the past months, I’ve been dealing with persistent pain in my right elbow during training and matches. Despite trying various treatments to manage it, the discomfort never fully went away,” the right-handed player said in an Instagram post.

“After consulting with elbow specialists and discussing thoroughly with my team, we decided that arthroscopic surgery was the best option to fully resolve the issue. Yesterday, I underwent the procedure successfully, and I’m grateful to have it behind me.”

Zheng wrote she’ll be recovering over the “next few weeks and months.”

RUGBY

The United States brought the lightning and England created all the flash as it completed its Americas tour by cruising to a 40-5 win in Washington D.C.

England’s first game in the U.S. in 24 years was delayed for an hour by lightning in the area, and for another 40 minutes during the first half.

It didn’t help the Eagles as England, depleted of its British and Irish Lions touring Australia, racked up six tries and its biggest win over the U.S. in six years.

England extended its longest winning streak to seven matches under coach Steve Borthwick after wins in Argentina by 35-12 and 22-17.

South Africa won the under-20 world championship for the first time in 13 years after beating New Zealand 23-15 in the final in Rovigo, Italy.
