President Donald Trump is threatening to hold up a new stadium deal for Washington’s NFL team if it does not restore its old name of the Redskins, which was considered offensive to Native Americans.
Trump also said Sunday that he wants Cleveland’s baseball team to revert to its former name, the Indians, saying there was a “big clamoring for this” as well.
The Washington Commanders and Cleveland Guardians have had their current names since the 2022 seasons and both have said they have no plans to change back.
Trump said the Commanders franchise would be “much more valuable” if it restored its old name.
“I may put a restriction on them that if they don’t change the name back to the original Washington Redskins, and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, Washington Commanders, I won’t make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington,” Trump said on his social media site.
His latest interest in changing the name reflects his broader effort to roll back changes that followed a national debate on cultural sensitivity and racial justice. The team announced it would drop the Redskins name and the Indian head logo in 2020 during a broader reckoning with systemic racism.
The Commanders and the District of Columbia government announced a deal earlier this year to build a new home for the football team at the site the old RFK Stadium, the place the franchise called home for more than three decades.
Trump’s ability to hold up the deal remains to be seen. President Joe Biden signed a bill in January that transferred the land from the federal government to the District of Columbia.

The Kansas City Chiefs and defensive end George Karlaftis agreed to a reported four-year, $93 million contract that includes $62 million guaranteed, keeping one of the best young players on the roster through the 2030 season.
It is the second high-profile contract that Chiefs GM Brett Veach has finished in the past week. The Chiefs signed Pro Bowl right guard Trey Smith to a four-year, $94 million extension on Tuesday, setting the market for his position.
Karlaftis, the second of two first-round picks by the Chiefs in the 2022 draft, has started 44 of his 49 regular-season games for them. His best season came two years ago, when he had 10 1/2 sacks while starting every game, while he had eight sacks in 16 games last season, helping the Chiefs to reach a third straight Super Bowl.
Rashee Rice will be a full participant in Chiefs training camp, coach Andy Reid said, three days after the standout wide receiver was sentenced to 30 days in jail after authorities said he and another speeding driver caused a chain-reaction crash that left multiple people injured on a Dallas highway last year.
Whether he will be able to fully participate in the regular season remains to be seen.
The Seahawks released tight end Noah Fant on Sunday ahead of the start of training camp.
Lions defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike is out for the season after having knee surgery.

Manny Pacquiao pushed back against his doubters, the odds and even Father Time on Saturday night in Las Vegas, but in the end fell just short on judges’ scorecards as Mario Barrios (23-1-1, 15 KOs) escaped with a majority draw to retain the WBC welterweight championship.
Two judges scored it a draw, and Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KOs) was given a 115-113 victory on the third card.
Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KOs), enshrined into the International Boxing Hall of Fame last month, was trying to break his own record for oldest welterweight champ.
He was 40 when he emerged in 2019 split decision over Keith Thurman. This was the first appearance in the ring in nearly four years for the 46-year-old Filipino.
Sebastian Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) retained his WBC super welterweight title when Tim Tszyu (25-3) didn’t come out for the eighth round in the co-main event.
Max Holloway defeated Dustin Poirier in a unanimous decision to retain the UFC BMF title in UFC 318 on Saturday night in New Orleans.
The win for Holloway (28-8) is the first in three fights against Poirier, who beat him in 2012 and 2019.
The loss ends a brilliant career for Poirier (30-10).
