The town of Logansport, Indiana, is mourning the death of one of its own — Cpl. Humberto Sanchez, a U.S. Marine who was supporting the evacuation in Afghanistan and was among the 13 service members killed in last week’s bombing in Kabul, officials said.
Sanchez, 22, was killed by a suicide bomb attack while assisting the evacuation of civilians from the airfield in Kabul, the Department of Defense said.
Sanchez was a 2017 graduate of Logansport High School in north central Indiana, about 130 miles from downtown Chicago. He was one of 17 people in his class to enlist in the military, Principal Matt Jones said.
“Humberto was a bright, athletic young man who was popular, well-liked by his soccer teammates, classmates, coaches and teachers,” Jones said. “He was honored to be putting on the Marine uniform and serving his country.”
Sanchez took honors and college-level classes, was in the homecoming court and was an artist, Jones said.
Eighteen other U.S. service members were wounded in Thursday’s blast, which claimed the lives of more than 160 Afghans. Officials blamed an Afghan offshoot of the Islamic State.
Logansport Mayor Chris Martin wrote on Facebook that he was “heartbroken” over Sanchez’s death.
“This young man had not yet even turned 30 and still had his entire life ahead of him,” he wrote. “Any plans he may have had for his post-military life were given in sacrifice due to the heart he exhibited in putting himself into harm’s way to safeguard the lives of others.”
“It is this sentiment, and this act of valor which is paramount, requiring each and every one of us to give pause and to lift these families up in prayer and in love.”
A Marine Corps carry team transferred Sanchez’s remains Sunday at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
Sanchez was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.
