An 83-year-old Troy woman recently reported she was scammed out of $19,000 in cash — and the fraudster came to her home to get the money, police said.
According to the Troy Police Department, the ruse started with an email that appeared to be from PayPal — but wasn’t — confirming a payment to Netflix for $290. But the woman hadn’t made that transaction, so she called a phone number provided in the email and was told $19,000 had been deposited into her bank account in error. To fix the mistake, she was to withdraw $19,000 in cash and someone would pick it up from her house.
The woman withdrew the money, then later that day a man arrived at her house and she gave it to him in an envelope, police said.
Law enforcement has repeatedly cautioned the public about providing payments to people they don’t know, and have said arrests in such cases are uncommon.
