People came for the food and stayed for the food as Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Church hosted its 49th annual Grecian Festival from Friday through Sunday in Merrillville.
There was Greek music, dancing and an outdoor beer garden.
And there was food.
The menu included roasted lamb, shish kebabs, Grecian chicken, gyros, Greek potatoes and pastries.
“Every year the main attraction is the food,” the Rev. Ted Poteres said. “Our sweets our out of this world. They are all made here on the grounds”
Poteres said over the years the event has become more family-oriented.
“We have something where people can gather together and have a good time,” he said. “The entertainment is beautiful. The best thing I like about the festival is the camaraderie that builds in the community.”
The Hellenic dancers performed each night. Other performers included Caught on Cline, The Nick Kazonis Band and Greek music by Ormi.
Chrisanne Christ, of Crown Point, attends the fest every year. Her first date with her husband was at the fest 31 years ago.
“I have Greek heritage and it brings out the Greek in me,” she said. “My favorite food is the lamb — and the desserts are to die for.”
Andrew Kyres, a church member and Crown Point councilman, volunteers at the fest every year. He said it is an opportunity for people in the region to experience Greek culture and Greek food.
“Ethnic festivals in general are highlights of summer festivals and people enjoy having them,” Kyres said. “We are blessed to be able to have the opportunity to provide that type of entertainment and experience here.”
