ANN ARBOR >> Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said he is looking for an offensive coordinator who will develop quarterbacks and build a balanced offense.
Moore fired Kirk Campbell after one season as offensive coordinator on Tuesday and is conducting a national search for a replacement. Campbell coached quarterbacks the last two seasons. Tight ends coach Steve Casula is interim coordinator until a replacement is hired.
The Wolverines (7-5) averaged 294.3 yards a game, the program’s worst output since 2008 (290.8), and Michigan was a minimal threat in the pass game. Michigan ranked 129th passing, averaging 133.6 yards a game, the program’s worst since 1983.
“As far as the coordinator change, I’m going to take my time,” Moore said Wednesday during a signing day news conference. Michigan has the No. 7-rated recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite.
“I’ve already started that process,” Moore added. “I don’t have an exact timetable. I want to do it as soon as possible, but I want to be very thorough with it so I’m taking my time day and night to do everything I can to get that process done.”
Moore said he does not currently anticipate any other staff changes.
“We’ll see,” Moore said. “Not right now.”
After Michigan’s 13-10 upset of Ohio State last Saturday in Columbus, Moore said he sat alone in his office and considered the season.
“(I) thought about where we are as an offense, where we are as a program, and what we need to do, and just felt like it was the best move for us,” Moore said of moving on from Campbell.
Moore said he’s considering coaches who are more experienced as coordinators and those working their way up in the business. Moore had been Michigan’s offensive coordinator/offensive line coach and became head coach after Jim Harbaugh’s departure to the NFL.
“There’s guys that are both,” Moore said. “There’s guys that have done it. There’s guys that have been head coaches. There’s guys that have been coordinators. There’s guys that are coordinators now that haven’t done it as long. You know, so there’s a vast mix. So, we’ll just keep chopping away and trying to find the best guy.”
Having just signed the nation’s top-rated recruit, Belleville High quarterback Bryce Underwood, it is imperative to find a coordinator/quarterbacks coach who can develop the young talent.
“We want to be a balanced team,” Moore said. “We’ve still got to be able to run the football, that’s got to be a thing to do, but someone that’s going to develop the quarterback at a high rate, and put them in a great position. Obviously, we’ve got to be able to teach a young guy whether he starts day one, week two, year two, whatever it is. You’ve got to develop them, you’ve got to see the progress. But as far as what the offense will look like, that’ll take shape as we go.”
Second five-star
Underwood is obviously the top recruit of the class, but Michigan landed a second five-star in offensive lineman Andrew Babalola, ranked No. 14 overall by 247Sports.
Moore said Babalola can be a top Michigan lineman.
“Man, he can be a first-round draft pick,” Moore said of the 6-foot-6 lineman. “He’s got all the skills because he’s got the size. He’s probably 285 right now, which is good. You don’t want him too big. He could easily be 310, like that. But he’s got great ankle flexibility, great hip flexibility. He’s strong.
“With a lineman, you never really know until they get here, but he’s got ability to do it - he can be as good as any guy that’s played here. He’s got that ability. He’s that smart. He loves the game that much. He’s an awesome fit. He’s a great player. But he’s an outstanding kid. High ceiling, so, we’ll see when he gets here.”
Extra points
Moore said 16 of Michigan’s recruits, including Underwood and Babalola, will be early-enrollees and will be able to participate in bowl practices later this month. … Safety and captain Rod Moore missed the season with a knee injury suffered in spring practice, and it’s possible he could return for the 2025 season. “We’re having conversations,” Moore said. “We’ll have an answer to that soon.” … Freshman tight end Brady Prieskorn suffered a “lower-body” injury in pre-game warmups last Saturday at Ohio Stadium. “I’m not sure exactly where he’s at in the recovery, but he’ll be back,” Moore said.
