When it opened last year, Mama’s Luncheonette, a takeout spot in San Francisco, made waves as word spread and lines formed for inventive, flavor-layered breakfast burritos and savory wraps.
The second location brings the business and its owners back to the city where they grew up. After a two-month soft opening to fine-tune the interior and let the crew settle in, they officially opened this month on East Blithedale, where Pearl’s Phat Burgers operated from 2003 to 2016 and Phyllis’ Giant Burgers until 2023.
Why all the buzz? They credit their popularity to a creative take on handhelds that also happen to be halal — meaning the ingredients are clean and responsibly sourced — and to their emphasis on hospitality shaped by years of experience in fine dining.
Unexpected additions like smoked grass-fed brisket can be folded into the Mama’s breakfast burrito, which starts with scrambled pasture-raised eggs, avocado, smoked salsa, sharp cheddar and crispy tater tots. The Union Street comes with an avocado-herb blend and braised kale, with or without turkey bacon.
The third morning option is the Egg McLovin’, a sandwich stacked with house-made chicken sausage, griddled onions, aged cheddar and harissa aioli on a sourdough English muffin from Panorama bakery in San Francisco.
Confining a salad inside a wrap might prompt concern about sogginess, but Mama’s chopped free-range lemon pepper-crusted chicken Caesar with Della Fattoria croutons holds the crunch and comes with a side of house-made smoked paprika potato chips.
Wraps also come filled with chicken tikka masala and turmeric-pickled cucumbers, cabbage slaw and pickled red onions on lavash; wild marinated oyster mushrooms and arugula with mint and tamarind chutneys on spiced labneh; or 12-hour braised lamb with red pepper muhammara, grilled sumac onions, Oaxaca cheese, barberries and herbed tahina. The interior got a full facelift that includes white hex tile floors and quartz counters. Chrome and vinyl stools lining the window counter, along with a few retro red tables and vintage teal and red diner chairs, are holdovers from its former life as a burger joint. Two red metal bistro tables sit out on the sidewalk.
Mama’s Luncheonette is open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 East Blithedale Ave. in Mill Valley. Breakfast items are available until noon or whenever they run out. For more information and updates, follow on Instagram at @mamasluncheonette.
Grab-and-go sandwiches
Made-to-order pressed sandwiches, wrapped and ready to go, are now available at D’Angelo’s Focacceria, a new takeout concept tucked inside southern Italian restaurant Piazza D’Angelo in downtown Mill Valley.
The Italian-inspired lineup includes combinations like breaded chicken cutlets or pork meatballs with mozzarella and house tomato sauce; grilled vegetables, pesto and caramelized onions; layered Italian meats; and porchetta with provolone, caramelized onions and avocado. All are served on fresh house-baked focaccia or a hero roll.
“We’ve always been passionate about celebrating Italian food culture, and (this) gives us a new way to share that love through the comforting simplicity of focaccia sandwiches,” said owner and executive chef Luigi Petrone in a press release.
Beverages include four iced matcha lattes (regular, strawberry, pistachio or tiramisu), iced Americanos and passion fruit lemonade.
Orders can be placed from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, either online at piazzadangelo.com or by scanning the QR code at the restaurant’s bar at 22 Miller Ave. in Mill Valley.
