After West Side guard Quimari Peterson finished the Hoosier Basketball Top 60 Senior Workout on Sunday, he took care of some college business.
Peterson, the 2020-21 Post-Tribune Boys Basketball Player of the Year, committed to Indiana State, making the announcement on Twitter.
The Top 60 Senior Workout is a tryout for the Indiana All-Stars. Peterson said it went well. And he was happy to get his college decision out of the way.
It’s been a strange year for high school seniors. Peterson likely would’ve played his way into a high-major offer in a normal year, but this recruiting cycle turned into a grab bag for coaches and players due to the coronavirus pandemic. He couldn’t make official visits, and coaches couldn’t come to his games.
Peterson said the offer from Indiana State was unexpected and welcome.
“It just came out of the blue,” he said.
The Sycamores (15-10, 11-7 Missouri Valley Conference) list nine players on the roster for the 2021-22 season. Peterson, who averaged 14.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists while leading West Side to its first regional title since 2005, will get a chance to play immediately.
“I can come in right away and make an impact,” he said.
Other programs that extended offers to Peterson were IUPUI, New Orleans and Valparaiso. He said Drake was recruiting him too.
Peterson thought the process might drag out until the transfer shuffling ended. But he found what was he was looking for from Indiana State and decided not to wait.
In his tweet, he thanked his coaches and teammates for helping develop him into a “better player and person.”
“I just feel like this is the best choice for me,” Peterson said. “I’m ready to go to the next level.”
