Emma Wright was known as “Nana” to most of the people who knew her in the Morgan Park neighborhood where she had lived for more than 50 years.

“Just a mother to anybody,” her daughter Kimberly Lewis said Monday. “Not just to her own children. To anybody.”

Sunday night, police say two gunmen walked into the backyard of Wright’s home in the 10800 block of South Morgan Street and fired as many as 50 rounds. Bullets shattered Wright’s bedroom window and hit the 71-year-old in the head, left arm, right shoulder and right hand.

Her grandson and his girlfriend were in the home and told police they rushed to her room after hearing the gunshots. Wright was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead. Police said they had no one in custody.

Her daughter told the Tribune that Wright had deep roots in Morgan Park. She had lived in the same house for at least 52 years and was known for opening her door to people in need.

“This community is going to be very sad because they all know her,” Lewis said. “And this is just tragic.”

Her mother had just visited her in Texas for Thanksgiving. “She was just with me in San Antonio,” Lewis said. “For her to return to something so — I have no words.”

The grandson’s girlfriend told police she saw two people in dark clothes fire shots at the home around 7:40 p.m., police said. About 50 shell casings from possibly three weapons, including a rifle, were found in the backyard.

According to a police report, investigators suspect the grandson “was likely the intended target” in the shooting. But the grandson, reached by the Tribune, said he told police he didn’t know why he would be a target.

“I don’t know nothing about intended target, and I don’t have nothing to say,” he said by phone. “I told them (police) everything I know already, which is too much nothing.”

Lewis said police were asking people for any potential video footage or information on the shooting.
