A Chicago man was sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in the May 2023 shooting death of a 9-year-old Matteson boy.

Daekwon Robinson, 23, of the 8500 block of South Manistee Avenue, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting of Omiuri Jones-Brown, a third grader.

The shooting took place May 25, 2023, outside the boy’s Matteson home and police said at the time the shooting stemmed from a fight between teenagers.

Brown was a third grader at Arcadia Elementary School in Olympia Fields.

Robinson was initially indicted on several charges, including first-degree murder, according to the indictment, filed in October 2023.Court documents show Robinson pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder Friday. The 20-year sentence includes a four-year term he is serving concurrently for an unrelated charge of felony possession of a firearm following an arrest by Chicago police, according to court filing.

In exchange for Robinson’s plea, prosecutors dropped other charges pending against him in the shooting, including attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery.

Robinson has been jailed since shortly after his arrest, and the sentence includes a credit of 640 days for time already served.

The indictment shows a man was shot and wounded at the same time the young boy was shot, and stated Robinson also fired shots in the direction of two other people.

Police received a call shortly after 6 p.m. from a woman stating her grandson had been shot outside their home in the 800 block of Campus Avenue.

After the boy was taken to the hospital, Matteson police were informed a 20-year-old man was taken to Franciscan Health Hospital in Olympia Fields for treatment of a nonlife-threatening gunshot wound sustained during a fight in Matteson.

Police in their preliminary investigation said the 20-year-old and 9-year-old were shot during the same fight between two groups of teenagers outside the Campus Avenue home.
