Police: Rent scam costs prospective tenant $2,200
A Troy man recently reported to police that he lost $2,200 for a deposit on a home that was supposedly for rent.
The prospective tenant said he responded to a listing for a home for rent in Birmingham on Facebook Marketplace, according to a release from the Troy Police Department.
He looked at the home in person and sent $2,200 via Zelle and Apple gift cards for the deposit before becoming suspicious.
“He later learned that the home was currently listed for sale, not for rent, and it was a scam,” police said in the release.
Police are investigating.
