Left-handed pitcher Jared Koenig, an Aptos High alum, was among the Milwaukee Brewers recognized for their efforts in 2024 by a panel from the Milwaukee Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America on Monday.

Koenig was voted the Brewers’ Unsung Hero. Koenig signed with Milwaukee as a free agent on Nov.17 and was a non-roster invitee to Spring Training. He went 9-4 with a 2.47 ERA and one save in 55 games, which included six starts. He held opponents to a .229 batting average while recording 63 strikeouts in 62.0 innings and stranding 25 of 32 inherited runners.

Catcher William Contreras was voted the Brewers’ Most Valuable Player for the second straight season, Tobias Myers was voted Most Valuable Pitcher, outfielder Jackson Chourio unanimously earned Top Newcomer honors, and shortstop Willy Adames received the Good Guy Award.

Yeti National Championships >> Cruz Padilla, out of Rock City Climbing Center in Anaheim, won gold in men’s Lead competition at the 2024 Yeti National Championships in Salt Lake City on Tuesday.

Hugo Hoyer of Chattanooga, Tennessee, earned silver, and Sergey Lakhno of Seattle took bronze.

Climbing icon Chris Sharma, 43, a Santa Cruz native who lives in Barcelona, Spain, took ninth place in the semifinals, one spot shy of reaching the final.

Melina Costanza of Seattle earned gold in women’s Lead final. Analise Van Hoang of Berkeley took silver, and Quinn Mason of Seattle earned bronze.

NFL

Bills 23, at Jets 20 >> New York safety Ashtyn Davis, a Santa Cruz High and Cal alum, made a season-best nine tackles in the Jets’ loss to Buffalo in the teams’ AFC West game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Monday night.

Davis, a fifth-year pro, made six unassisted stops, including one for a loss of yards. He saw an increase in playing time after veteran safety Chuck Clark left the game with an ankle injury in the first half.

The Jets (2-4) play at Pittsburgh (4-2) on Sunday at 5:20 p.m.

Girls tennis

Scotts Valley 6, at Santa Cruz 1 >> The Falcons on Monday won their Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League match from Thursday after it was called due to darkness.

Scotts Valley held a 3-1 lead in matches after Aila Papadopoulos, Sofia Niklaus, and Erin Szymanski earned singles wins on Thursday.

Senior Ava Keller sealed the Falcons’ team win Monday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles. The Falcons’ duo of Dillon Fiorita and Georgia Chetcuti combined for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) win at No. 3 doubles.

Santa Cruz defaulted at No. 2 doubles.

Scotts Valley (6-2, 5-1) hosts undefeated Aptos (6-0) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Judo

San Jose Open >> Watsonville’s JJ Kim-Ebio, competing for Cal Judo, won gold at the 2024 San Jose Open at The Plex on Saturday.

Kim-Ebio went 3-0 in the Senior (15+) Novice Under 73kg division.
