NFL Hall of Famer John Elway won’t be charged after his business partner Jeffrey Sperbeck was fatally injured falling out of his golf cart at a California resort community last April, authorities said.

Sperbeck, Elway’s partner and former agent, died after suffering an injury when he tumbled out of a golf cart driven by the former quarterback on April 26.

Sperbeck’s cause of death was “blunt force trauma” and the manner of death was an accident that occurred when the “passenger fell from the golf cart,” the county coroner’s report said.

Elway said in an April statement that he was devastated by the death of his close friend. That statement did not address his presence at the scene.

Sperbeck began managing Elway in 1990, when Elway was quarterback for the Denver Broncos. He represented more than 100 NFL players during a three-decade career as an agent and business adviser.

He was best known as Elway’s partner who helped manage the Hall of Famer’s extensive off-field business empire, which included restaurants, car dealerships and a winery.

Wanyama cleared to return to hardcourt

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama expects to play this coming season and has been fully cleared after dealing with deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder for the last few months, he told the French newspaper L’Equipe.

There was no immediate comment from the Spurs on the report. It has been expected that the team anticipated Wembanyama would be able to start this coming season.

Wembanyama was the league’s rookie of the year two years ago, and Spurs guard Stephon Castle won that same trophy this past season. Wembanyama was the front-runner to be defensive player of the year last season when he was diagnosed with the blood clot in his right shoulder in February.

He was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.8 blocks and 3.7 assists when he was shut down; the only player in NBA history to finish a season averaging all that was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1975-76.

Grizzlies hire former Wolves coach Saunders

Former Timberwolves head coach Ryan Saunders was hired as the lead assistant coach of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Saunders began his coaching career with the Gophers as a graduate mangaer under Tubby Smith in 2009 before transitioning to an assistant role with the Washington Wizards that same year.

In 2014, Saunders came to the Wolves as an assistant, before taking over as head coach in 2019 after Tom Thibodeau was fired.

The Medina native went 43-94 with the team before his dismissal in 2021.

He had been an assistant with the Denver Nuggets from 2022 until last season.

76ers’ George has knee surgery after injury

Philadelphia 76ers wing player Paul George had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to treat an injury that occurred during a recent workout.

George’s rehabilitation program is set to begin and he will be re-evaluated prior to the start of training camp, the Sixers said.

The coming NBA season would be George’s 16th since Indiana drafted him 10th overall in 2010.

George, who turned 35 on May 2, signed a $212 million, four-year contract in free agency last summer.

He averaged 16.2 points in just 41 games last season, the lowest scoring average since his second NBA campaign. The nine-time All-Star is averaging 20.6 ppg for his career.
