Joel Embiid will miss the rest of the season, with the Philadelphia 76ers saying Friday he is “medically unable to play” and will focus on treatment and rehabilitation of his left knee.

Embiid was already set to miss his 40th game of the season today when the 76ers host the Warriors. But the 76ers said there will be no more games for the star center in 2024-25.

“The Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid have been consulting with top specialists regarding ongoing issues with his left knee. After further evaluation, it has been determined that he is medically unable to play and will miss the remainder of the season to focus on treatment and rehabilitation,” the team said in a statement.

“We are working with medical experts to determine the exact treatment plan and will update media when we have more information. The team and specialists will continue working with Joel to ensure the best path forward for his long-term health and performance.”

One of the preseason favorites to contend for an NBA title, the Sixers take a nine-game losing streak into today’s game. Even with the heavy slide, the Sixers were just 2 1/2 games out of a spot in the play-in tournament entering Friday’s games.

Embiid hasn’t played since he was benched for ineffectiveness in the fourth quarter of a loss last Saturday to Brooklyn.

The 76ers are 8-11 with Embiid this season; 12-27 without him.

Embiid has been hobbled by injuries all season, and served a three-game suspension for shoving a member of the media. He’s averaged 23.8 points — he averaged at least 30 and won two scoring titles the last three seasons — and scored only 29 points combined in his last two games.

Nuggets 134, Pistons 119 >> Nikola Jokic had 23 points, 17 rebounds and 15 assists, Jamal Murray scored 31 points, and Denver ended host Detroit’s eight-game winning streak Friday night.

Michael Porter Jr. scored 28 points and Christian Braun matched Jokic with 23 for Denver, which has won 11 of its last 13 games.

Malik Beasley had 16 points as Detroit’s sixth man, but the Pistons’ starters were outscored 113-54. Cade Cunningham finished with 11 points on 3-for-12 shooting and only had five assists and three rebounds.

Thunder 135, Hawks 119 >> Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 31 points and visiting Oklahoma City continued its overwhelming dominance of the Eastern Conference by beating Atlanta.

Luguentz Dort scored 20 points and led Oklahoma City’s long-range assault by shooting 6 of 11 on 3-pointers. Jalen Williams also scored 20 points for the Thunder.

Oklahoma City improved to 21-1 against the Eastern Conference this season.

Atlanta center Onyeka Okongwu had 23 points and 13 rebounds.

Cavaliers 123, Celtics 116 >> Donovan Mitchell scored 41 points, including 12 in the fourth, to help Cleveland rally from 22 points down and win at Boston.

Darius Garland added 20 points and seven assists. Evan Mobley finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds for his 27th double-double to give Cleveland a split in the four-game season series.

The Celtics’ Jayson Tatum finished with 46 points, 16 rebounds and nine assists. Jaylen Brown added 37 points.

Boston sprinted out to a 25-3 lead. But after a cold start the Cavs responded, going on a 41-22 run to get back into the game.

TRAIL BLAZERS 121, NETS 102 >> Shaedon Sharpe scored 25 points, Dalano Banton had 14 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, and Portland cruised to a road victory over Brooklyn to extend its winning streak to four games.

Cam Thomas scored 16 points in 21 minutes in his return to the Brooklyn lineup after missing 24 games due to a left hamstring strain.
