Resident of San Jose
With great sadness, the family of Robert (Bob) Manuel Silvera, of San Jose, CA, announces his passing on June 17, 2024, nine days before his 92nd birthday. Lovingly remembered by his wife of 68 years, Mary Silvera; children, Gina Willmes (John), Michael Silvera (Celeste) and Carol Silvera (Doug); grandsons, Robert Willmes (Beth) and Matthew Willmes (Jennifer); great grandsons, August Willmes and Chase Willmes (born shortly thereafter); sister, Lois Escobar; brother-in-law, Ralph Dinardo (Anne); eight nieces and nephews and many other close friends and family. Preceded in death by brother, William Silvera, brother-in-law, Joseph Escobar, sisters-in-law, Gina Thomas and Rosemary Dinardo.
Born on June 26, 1932 to Mike and Lily Silvera and raised in San Jose, Bob was the youngest of three children. He attended Orchard School and Bellarmine College Preparatory High School, class of 1950. Bob worked tirelessly on the family Gish Road ranch before studying at Heald’s Business College where he met his future wife, Mary, on a blind double-date. Bob proudly served in the United States Navy before working at Hales in downtown San Jose and Weinstocks in Sacramento. He later opened his own small hardware business, Suburban Hardware, with his brother-in-law, Ralph. After selling his business, Bob took his retail expertise and jovial personality to Montgomery Ward and Home Depot, where he continued to find personal fulfillment while leaving a lasting impression on colleagues and customers.
A simple man of uncompromising integrity, Bob embodied the spirit, resilience and patriotism of the greatest generation while humbly modeling a strong work ethic for his children to learn and emulate. Always happy and smiling, you could hear Bob whistling as he meticulously manicured his prized front and back yards. Although he traveled the world, his favorite destination was the Azores Islands for their beauty and pride in his Portuguese heritage.
Known for his calm demeanor and bringing humor, kindness and compassion to those around him, Bob is deeply missed but forever alive and cherished in our hearts. Private Celebration of Life will be held on June 26, 2025, marking his 93rd birthday.
